Kazuki Abe Solo Exhibition: “Hand-Drawn Computation” Venue: Art Space Kimura ASK? 2F Dates: March 3–15, 2025 Under the theme of Hand-Drawn Computation, I developed a system that generates visuals from sound information. The system analyzes the characteristics of sound in real time and uses them as the basis for drawing images. The work actively incorporates elements associated with hand-drawn expression, such as free-flowing curves and subtle transformations of form. By reinterpreting the delicacy of hand-drawing as a sequential drawing algorithm, this project explores computational methods of image-making.

Based on the concept that life is a story found after moving through the city and taking in its nature, and that this is what shapes the self, the collage unfolds accordingly. While carrying the uplifting spirit fitting for the theme song of “King’s Brunch,” I hope it can offer comfort by saying, “It’s okay as you are, as long as you keep moving forward little by little.”

Using BONJIN’s signature chaotic collage style, I created a work centered on the theme of a zoetrope. It expresses the way everyday life appears to repeat endlessly, and yet deep within the heart, the hidden light and ideals still remain. By employing an observer-like perspective to portray the structure within the jacket artwork for “Ubugoe,” I also tried to create the impression of looking down upon even that everyday life from above. Even if the treasure within oneself falls apart, one must still keep running forward—I tried to express the melancholy of that feeling and the aesthetics of it itself.

A circus-style music video themed around the desire for approval. It portrays, in a show-like format, the characters’ comical yet slightly unsettling descent as they keep chasing likes. The more they become fixated on “being seen,” the more chaotic the stage grows. While foregrounding the fun of entertainment, it presents a satirical and ironic take on the modern need for validation. Each character personifies a different form of approval-seeking, such as “domination of others” and “courtship.” Their character designs are filled with circus-inspired motifs.

Based on the atmosphere of classic galge/eroge, this is a wildly over-the-top 8-bit music video made with fun and momentum as the top priority. While borrowing the signature visual direction and symbolic designs of dating sims, the structure is built to keep firing off gags at a brisk pace. Rather than worrying too much about the limitations of pixel art, it fully commits to overwhelming the viewer through dense visuals and editing rhythm. In this work, the “paradise” feeling that comes with the harem setup is also treated as an important element. I poured a flood of convenient dreams and excessive happiness into the visuals. By handling the direction, pixel art creation, and editing all myself, I aimed to create a music video that puts its upbeat energy front and center.

Drawing on the song’s origins as a work made entirely through sampling and cut-up techniques, the piece interprets rotoscoping as an animation method with the same structural logic. Rotoscoping is a technique that traces live-action footage, allowing the movement of the subject to be directly and vividly reflected on screen. In addition, this work combines stencil-based spray techniques. By incorporating the non-deterministic fluctuations of particles, it seeks to transform the vividness of rotoscoping into the subject’s own indexicality, and to reconfigure it.

An independently produced work themed around existence in illustration. When I saw a convenience store clerk simply standing there in between tasks, I felt an indescribable sense of appeal. By depicting the clerk from eight directions, a fleeting, wavering presence emerges—just a person simply being there. By connecting the eight directional illustrations, a video is created in which the surroundings rotate around the clerk as the axis. Through the moving image, the clerk on the screen comes to appear as if they have three-dimensional coordinates.

Official Lyric Video for Mrs. GREEN APPLE’s “Darling.” This work takes on the challenge of expressing the song’s world and emotions not through people or specific characters, but through light—such as the movement of shadows, lanterns, and candle flames. The video unfolds with a simple structure, moving from a viewpoint just above the ground and passing through countless lanterns and candles. Each light, however, carries meaning. The many different kinds of lanterns and candles represent the differences in people’s lives, while the scene in which the flames are extinguished by heavy rain symbolizes hardship and loss. Toward the end, an overwhelming number of fireworks are launched, expressing the brilliance and wonder of life. On the technical side, to keep the camera centered on the ground while still bringing the fireworks in the sky into the frame, careful attention was paid to every detail, such as wetting the ground to reflect the sky.

A music video for the 2nd single, “Noise, Violence, Music, Ecstasy,” from Toho’s character band project, Mofu Mofu Music Caravan. A charming, pop-infused work centered around stylized 3DCG characters. Throughout the video, energetic effects inspired by manga speed lines are incorporated to create a dynamic visual expression. In keeping with the theme of the piece, the video also makes extensive use of striking direction based on Japanese motifs, such as moving folding screens, shadow puppetry seen through shoji screens, and sumi-e ink paintings. Furthermore, the overall 3DCG compositing reflects a strong awareness of Japanese aesthetics, with colors and textures inspired by nihonga and ukiyo-e.

An MV that depicts a world reminiscent of 90s-style retro anime and sci-fi, rendered in psychedelic colors. By combining realistic 3DCG with flat effects and unifying the whole piece with a faded, old-tape-like composite, it creates a distinctive nostalgic texture. Strong gloss, glitter, and excessive bloom effects were inspired by the atmosphere of the electronic music videos of the past. In the background, a cyberpunk city spreads out like the large-scale sci-fi anime series of the old days, and symbolic motifs are scattered throughout the details, including a megalopolis fused with flesh-like forms inspired by the theme of bergamot. In addition, the lyric expressions that appear in a handwritten style are also one of the features that leave a strong impression of this work.

MV for Tomonari Sora’s “Yellow Signal,” the new opening theme for the rebroadcast version of the TV anime *Assassination Classroom*. This work is composed as a retro video game-inspired world, with motifs drawn from the story and characters of *Assassination Classroom*. By using pixel-art textures and low-poly 3D models, and then applying a VHS-style composite in the final finishing stage, the visuals were given a nostalgic texture. In addition, the cut-ins and movie-like scenes that were “typical” of slightly older games were researched and recreated. In the flight scenes, to emphasize the sense of speed at Mach-like movement, we also incorporated the delay effect of chunk loading that occurs during high-speed travel in games such as *Minecraft*. In addition to the youthful feeling of the anime itself, taking into account the context of a rebroadcast of a series from about 10 years ago, we aimed for a feeling like a “reunion that brings back memories of those days” by weaving in retro elements.

The internal sounds of a mechanical wristwatch were recorded using a specialized microphone. Those recordings were then reconstructed into an audiovisual work. At the core of the movement is the balance wheel, oscillating eight times per second — what the watch industry refers to as “8 beats.” The work was inspired by the resonance between this rhythm and the concept of the 8-beat rhythm in music. When recorded, the rhythm proved to be extremely precise, yet the pitch fluctuated ever so slightly. Precise, yet somehow organic. This sensation — constant, yet subtly unstable — is expressed through both sound and visuals. In the CG work, rather than simply recreating the internal structure and metallic textures of the watch, we took an abstract approach to visualize “the vibration of time itself.” Within an exact cyclical motion, slight fluctuations begin to emerge. Through layers of light, vibration, repetition, and microscopic shifts, the piece visualizes the “vibration of time” occurring inside a mechanical watch.

We planned and produced a brand film for BUTTERFLY, a brand owned by Tamasu, one of the world’s leading table tennis equipment manufacturers based in Suginami, Tokyo. This time, we featured Fan Zhendong, the Chinese player who has won the World Table Tennis Championships twice, earned a gold medal at last year’s Paris Olympics, and become a Grand Slam champion. The key message is Focus Within. (The one you need to face is yourself.) To develop the skill that allows him to surpass other players in every aspect—spin, speed, timing, control, and tactics—and earn admiration from table tennis fans around the world, we portray the dialogue he has had with himself over many years and the meticulous way he has honed his technique, together with his own voice-over, sharp visual expression, and sound design. The film has received an outstanding response across the board, including more than 1 million views overnight after its release on Butterfly’s official global Instagram account. Please take a look.

We created a concept movie for “EXPO WORLDs – Osaka-Kansai Expo OPEN DESIGN PROJECT.” As multiple “worlds” resonate with one another to co-create a new future—EXPO WORLDs is an open design project that aims to infuse the entire Osaka-Kansai Expo venue with the color and vitality of “life,” while designing for open participation. To visualize the philosophy and vision of this project, we built a world through visuals and sound and expressed it as a movie. People, nature, and technology meet, overlap, and resonate. The natural landscape of Hokuriku, filled with a strong sense of vitality, and the Gassho-zukuri houses that have stood unchanged for centuries. We were responsible for producing the still photography and promotional video for the Only on Airbnb project, which offers a special stay in one of the houses in Suganuma Village, Gokayama, a hidden area surrounded by towering, rugged mountains along the Shogawa River in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture. The nine Gassho-zukuri houses standing amid untouched, rich natural surroundings, along with the atmosphere of the area, are truly a quintessential Japanese landscape. We focused on how to capture, in an authentic and compelling way, the history and culture handed down here, as well as the scenes created by the lives of the people who live there. The photographer was Satoshi Nagare, who has received high acclaim for interior and exterior shots in domestic and international media, including Casa Brutus. The video DP was Jin Ito, and the drone footage was shot by Tetsuichiro Kitagawa. The work was distributed to news media around the world at a press event held on site on 6/21, and received an excellent response from media outlets in various countries.

I have continued working on cross-disciplinary production, such as pictorial images with cinematic qualities and painterly animation. This work, *Sandbox*, is an experiment in replacing painting and animation with a game engine. In this work, I used a game engine to create an “electronic sculpture” and attempted to visualize a non-tactile sense of reality. By following afterimages that traverse space, it aims to unsettle the viewer’s bodily perception. At the same time, an autoplay function was built in so that the game would assimilate into the environment like ambient music, becoming a “passive game / background game.” It is an interaction/installation in which the viewer/player can seamlessly move back and forth between “play,” controlled with a controller, and “viewing,” without using a controller.

At the newly opened immersive space “tem” in Phoenix Mall of Asia, a commercial facility in Bangalore, India, we created a 360° immersive theater experience themed around the Japanese seasons and spirituality. Reinterpreting Japan’s four seasons as a “circular structure,” we designed an immersive environment that leads visitors into a spiritual world beyond them. By using mirrored surfaces for both the floor and ceiling, the imagery extends infinitely in the vertical direction, while 360° panoramic visuals are projected onto the walls. The moment visitors step inside, they are enveloped in the changing seasons and the rhythm of light. A “mandala” where Japan’s view of the seasons and Indian philosophy intersect As the core of the presentation, we reconstructed the essence of Japanese culture—“a sense of unity with nature,” “the contrast between stillness and motion,” and “a worldview in which the seasons cycle endlessly”—into a “mandala structure,” which also resonates strongly with Indian thought, creating a universal spiritual world that transcends time and national borders.

At the Edo-Tokyo Museum in Tokyo, which reopened on March 31, 2026, we produced three works—“Traditional GRID,” “Moving Picture,” and “Another Sky”—as part of the permanent video projection program presented in the Edo-Tokyo Plaza on the third floor. Cultural resources held by the Edo-Tokyo Museum, such as ukiyo-e prints and maps, have been reimagined not as objects to be viewed, but as a spatial experience that envelops visitors. Approximately 100 works by ukiyo-e artists and painters, including Katsushika Hokusai and Tōshūsai Sharaku, unfold overhead as landscapes connected to modern-day Tokyo. Crossing the memories of cultural properties, architecture, and the city, this project seeks not only to “exhibit” history, but to give it form as an experience that visitors can physically অনুভ in the scale of this place. The body reflects.）, held at TOKYONODE in Toranomon Hills In GALLERY A, “Memories of Nature,” which features a celestial dome, we created an immersive experience in which placing your hand over a spherical LED triggered an interactive performance where the celestial-dome projection mapping and 32.2-channel ultra-high-definition spatial audio responded, allowing visitors to be enveloped in the sounds of nature and nature-inspired music.
