The AR game “Overbeast,” powered by VERIZON’s 5G network, launched in the U.S. in spring 2023. WOW was responsible for the character design, modeling, and animation of the beasts featured in the game. By leveraging 5G pixel streaming, the project aimed to deliver a grander, more vivid visual experience than had previously been possible with AR. Based on the concept of “kings of each animal kingdom with special abilities,” the beasts were designed in both juvenile and adult forms. Various simulations were used to emphasize each creature’s individuality, bringing them to life as dynamic beings. In addition, while the animation speed was slowed down to make the beasts feel massive, battle actions were made quick, creating a sense of both realistic scale and unreal speed to heighten immersion and realism in the game world. We planned and produced “MoAR – Museum of AR,” an art gallery where you can experience large-scale digital artworks in AR, using the coworking building WHEREVER in Roppongi, Tokyo, as a canvas. In addition to our original works, such as a logo leaping out from a sign, a giant monster roaming the building, a swarm of ghosts inhabiting the building being sucked away, and a giant figure peering out from inside the building, we also collaborated with a total of 24 artists active across a wide range of fields, including Inae, Yukishita Mayu, and others. In all, you can experience 28 AR mural artworks at once. By using App Clips, we eliminated the need to download an app, allowing visitors to simply scan the QR codes painted on the building’s exterior walls and view works by a variety of artists in AR.

EPONYM 1A HAKUSHI HASEGAWA & COSMIC LAB presents Hakushi Hasegawa, who is opening new doors in music with ultra-dense pop sounds, teamed up with COSMIC LAB, and their first self-produced show in the Kansai area was held at Misono Universe on December 26, 2022. A special night was realized with ∈Y∋ (BOREDOMS), whose evolution as a DJ is limitless, appearing as the DJ after performing at Uganda’s Nyege Nyege Festival. The energy radiating from both artists expanded, creating an experimental moment of wonder.

In the NHK special program “This is JO1 - Go to the Dream - ” featuring the global boy group JO1, COSMIC LAB handled the direction of “JO1 x Technology.” We were responsible for planning, designing, developing, and directing a cutting-edge virtual production system that combines XR, lighting systems, and sensor technology. By expanding the world of the music and the dance performance in which all 11 members move in sync, it brought out a new challenge from “JO1.”

A space live entertainment project that opens up the universe to everyone. We want to open up the stage of space, where only astronauts have been able to play an active role until now, to everyone through the power of the internet and design. With that vision, we established a live broadcast studio in Kibo, the Japanese Experiment Module aboard the International Space Station, to connect space and Earth in both directions. While gazing at the blue Earth, people around the world freely express themselves and talk about KIBO. Together with artists and companies, we will co-create this entirely new borderless form of entertainment.

An interactive video work created for NIKE AIR MAX DAY 2024 Dynamic Land, held in Shinjuku Kabukicho. The theme was “common sense starts to go off the rails.” Images from the camera are distorted in real time using the classical technique of slit-scan. This piece was created in Unity, and by combining 3D Texture and Shader, it aims to achieve more complex visual transformations than conventional slit-scan.

A project that explores a three-dimensional imaging device based on the principles of light wavelengths, and the possibilities of visual expression using it. By turning the limitations of the device—such as human perceptual abilities, the “maximum of three layers,” and the fixed colors for each layer—into advantages, a new “mode of expression” unique to this medium was developed, resulting in a group of three-dimensional animations with a vivid sense of depth that could be described as sculptures of light.

A live session with Plant Records, led by DJ YASA, formerly of KIREEK, who achieved the remarkable feat of winning the DMC World Championship five years in a row. YoshimiO (OOIOO) and TOKIO AOYAMA also took part in this work.

Participated as an XRVJ in the performance by Hakushi Hasegawa, the young musician drawing global attention, on “THE HIT,” the music program hosted by Flying Lotus. By integrating LiDAR and ARKit into COSMIC LAB’s XR live system, an audio-reactive VFX performance was improvised as live VJing, transforming the musician’s physical presence.

EYE (BOREDOMS)'s new project "FINALBY( )" with COSMIC LAB & Niimi Taiki & Kanta Horio COSMIC LAB, which explores the expansion of perception through spatial expressions where the visible and invisible intersect; Kanta Horio of the art-engineering group Ponoor Experiments, who explores the relationship between sound and machines based on physical phenomena through art and system development; programmer Taiki Niimi, who handles everything from circuit design to sound synthesis; and Shinji Mashiko, who has worked with BOREDOMS for many years as sub-director—through this collaboration, they create a new audiovisual experience centered on device objects. It made its debut on the WHITESTAGE at FUJIROCK FESTIVAL’21.

At the art and lifestyle festival “Tokyosaï 2024,” held in France in February 2024, we created the augmented reality work “Ukiyo.e AR” in collaboration with “Tokyo Tokyo,” an initiative by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government that promotes the appeal of Tokyo both in Japan and abroad. Eight AR animations were installed throughout the venue, drawing on Utagawa Hiroshige’s “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo” while reimagining contemporary Tokyo as original pixel art. Among the game participants who found all of these AR experiences and shared them on Instagram Stories, a lottery was held and airline tickets to Tokyo were awarded as a prize.

When people think of yokai, they may imagine them as beings that “scare people.” However, yokai have also long been seen as wind, mountains, and nature itself—beings that gently watch over us humans. This picture book, Mimamori Yokai, features many kind yokai who watch over children. I have loved yokai since I was a child, and I created this story to help my two very timid sons learn about their existence by focusing not on the “dark” side of yokai, but on their “bright” side.

Special rebroadcast of the XR live show from “NEWVIEW DOMMINE Vol.7”! LOST TAPES MIX is a conceptual DJ set made possible by digitizing a large number of open-reel tapes unearthed in the attic of the “Misono Universe Building.” The mix primarily features recordings made in the 1960s and 70s by the actual house band of “Cabaret Universe,” with many arrangements by Taro Kidan. An XR live stream set on a virtual universe that faithfully recreates in CG the peak of the original Misono Universe in 1956. The DJ and VJ played from the COSMIC LAB studio in Osaka, while virtual lighting joined the session remotely in real time from an undisclosed location in Tokyo via VPN, with the final output streamed from the DOMMUNE studio in Shibuya. At Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo, in the dedicated theater “499 Seconds: My Gattai” within the Signature Pavilion “Shin-Life Adventure” produced by Shoji Kawamori, 30 participants don VR headsets equipped with cameras and, through VR and MR technologies, simultaneously experience a universe-scale food chain—traveling beyond time and space from memories of the past in an immersive exhibition available nowhere else in the world. Through the “universe-scale food chain” envisioned by Shoji Kawamori, creator of numerous sci-fi works, visitors can experience the pavilion’s theme: “Life is fusion and transformation!” We were responsible for the direction and animation of this hyperspace theater “499 Seconds: My Gattai,” and, using spatial audio technology developed by SoVeC Inc. and Terasaka Bio Inc., we combined it with spatial audio produced by Sony PCL Inc. (hereafter Sony PCL), delivering a completely new audiovisual experience unlike anything before.
