中山晃子｜AKIKO NAKAYAMA
Painter. She performs “Alive Painting,” a practice in which a range of materials, from liquid to solid, are made to react with one another to create paintings. In her work, she vividly depicts all kinds of phenomena and emerging colors as metaphors for living organisms and relationships. Her works, in which various media and colors intermingle and continually transform, are reminiscent of improvised poetry. In addition to live performance, her activities span installations, video art, and more.

Akiko Nakayama’s work takes the classic medium of painting to unexpected, postmodern places. Through a method she calls “Alive Painting,” the Japanese artist brings her experimental practice to life using vibrant, luminous liquids that combine and dissolve, evoking the natural growth, transformation, and life cycle of all things on earth. Familiar forms emerge before melting into one another and taking on new characteristics, creating a living art that mirrors her abstract expression. As her materials shift through textures soft and hard, resonant and soothing, they in turn echo those sounds, creating a visual paradigm that delivers some of the most striking effects one might encounter at any festival—except here, they unfold in real time, at her fingertips.

This work is an installation piece involving water, mica, and vibration, presented at Komagome SOKO in 2022. In the petri dish peered into by the viewer, droplets run across the surface of the water, generated in time with the cycle of sound as it swells with intense vibration and then falls silent again, before disappearing back into the water. By capturing the water’s surface in real time with macro photography and projecting it at a large scale, I sought to follow the story of each tiny droplet as a unique presence, born and vanished, much like tracking a character in a film. 12-20 March 2022 'ETERNAL Art Space' Panasonic Center Ariake “Forms of Foam” is edited by selecting scenes from records of various live performances at different times and places, moments when bubbles are given a role beyond simply being bubbles in a painting and become a kind of metaphor, and then newly combining them. While the environment, role, and value surrounding phenomena change within society, bubbles continue to strive for a spherical form, and water continues to flow as water. This work briefly observes by layering the ever-changing form of ephemera with the unchanging form of foam.
