Description: At some point in time, humanity vanished from Earth in an instant. Countless pieces of space debris are scattered across Earth’s orbit. Among that debris, an optical disc happens to slip into a player, and the track begins to play. The thoughts left within the music take on the physical phenomenon of vibration and rain down upon the Earth. Parabolic antennas on the ground listen to the vibrations, and radio towers transmit radio waves of their own accord. Signage in an abandoned city displays the performer’s image, obscured by noise, while a three-dimensional hologram is projected onto a sandy beach. Waves gently brush against feet, and a semi-transparent body traces out the choreography. A roadside cathode-ray tube set bears a face mottled with static, hallucinating seven figures who should not be there. When the track ends, the player ejects the optical disc. The Earth glows, and the debris continues to circle in orbit.

Commentary: In representing Mr. Nagase, who exists across the dimensions of media, what I had in mind was to show the moment of crossing between dimensions. The passage back and forth between dimensions gradually accelerates, until eventually it crosses dimensions frame by frame. So rapid that the temporal arrangement can be mistaken for spatial contact, and with a movement of flicker that is too fast to stop and yet seems to stand still, the translucent body placed within it can touch you on the retina, between frame and frame. The haze that only becomes visible through motion was also fitting for a melody that feels as if carved out of a raging current—or perhaps written automatically—gentle / eerie / light. Listen to the blur, like a lump of light, with your eyes and ears.

Muō no Rigyo (A Carp That Appeared in My Dream) - Trailer

This film is adapted from “Muō no Rigyo” from “Ugetsu Monogatari” by Akinari Ueda, a magical realist tale written in Japan’s Edo period, also known as the source story for “Ugetsu,” the film by Kenji Mizoguchi. I paradoxically emphasized the subtle “kai’i (怪異)”—a Japanese word indicating something mysterious, strange, eerie, and sometimes dangerous—by reconstructing the storyline to make it rational and interpretable. I used photogrammetry to obtain its distinctive bumpy texture and create the strange scenery of a dream. By adapting the story of “Muō no Rigyo,” one of the tales in Ueda Akinari’s “Ugetsu Monogatari,” and using photogrammetry to render it as a 3D animation, I created this work. By extensively altering the uncanny tale of irrational events so that it could be interpreted as rationally as possible, I attempted to paradoxically present the remnants of contemporary mystery that still could not be fully filtered out. In addition, by using 3D models with distinctive textures obtained through photogrammetry, a somewhat imperfect technique that is weak in handling reflections, transparency, and motion, I attempted to create an eerie, dreamlike scene. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Voice describes a room and a life within it. This video consists of objects in a room and voices calling them. By using 3D models generated with photogrammetry and a list of nouns in a rhetorical manner, I tried to depict a room and the life within it as a fragmentary arrangement. A video in which the objects in a room and disembodied voices calling them are synchronized. Using still photogrammetric 3D models and a string of nouns, I attempted to depict the room and its inhabitant’s life and emotions as a fragmented arrangement.

Description: A telephone’s experience, which instantly connects people by carrying a buoyant invitation, an intimate conversation, or sad news as a distant (“tele”) voice/sound (“phone”), remains unchanged from past to present in the awkwardness of that connection. The time spent waiting for a call, the coarse sound quality, the slight delay, and the time difference between two faraway points still require us to listen closely to the other side of the receiver, and even create the illusion of being connected to a distant past. Because of these limitations, the telephone, which lets us hear a “more distant voice,” is a realistic and critical motif precisely in today’s world, where the sense of isolation is so strong.

"Shichigengakuen Student Council" is a self-produced project and unit in which six VTubers come together and work as student council members of "Nanajigen High School." qootain produced the music video for the title track, "Sokubutsuteki Ensemble," from their 1st EP. The video takes on a collage-like structure that combines multiple techniques and dimensions, including hand-drawn 2D animation, silhouette animation, 3DCG, and live-action shooting using miniatures.
