In Mekeru Eizo_Experiment 01, a single book is turned page by page in a quiet, matter-of-fact manner. The text written in the book serves as instructions for turning the pages, and at times it is also a transcription of the act of turning them. Or it can be said to function as a trigger for events that may happen in the future. This video is intervened in by perspectives from multiple positions: the author of the book, the performer turning the pages, the person who films and edits the video, and the viewer watching it. The subject of the text written in the book passes seamlessly through all of them. The fluctuations that exist there are, in the first place, a characteristic of language itself—something we unconsciously read, identify, and process when reading a text.
In Experiment 01, the act of “turning a page” is isolated and brought to the surface, raising questions such as: Whose hand is turning the page? Whose words are being written? It shakes the viewer’s perspective.
