Description: Drifting through nights that should never sink into the depths of the unconscious is a time that ought not to exist. As I lie quietly, a fairy is born from my spine, dissolving memories and the nocturnal city. A film work created through cutout animation. [Synopsis] On sleepless nights, a fairy is born from my spine. Time that should not exist flows on, and fragments of memory form the city. The fairy drifts through that once-seen landscape, reaching out toward the stars.

The Ferris Wheel

Under the ground we tread, water gently sways, and plants and trees grow by drawing it up. And even deeper below, a Ferris wheel turns. The things that have been swept away lie at the bottom, so they drift downward slowly. A single bird watches over it all, swimming waveringly around the Ferris wheel.

The Blue Castle

Description: At the bottom of the Vistula River in Warsaw, mermaids are collecting blue castles. A blue castle, someone’s dream, is beautiful yet fragile; with the passage of time, it decays and, at times, is destroyed. Sisi, a Polish woman, and Ran, a Japanese woman, are led by the mermaid and meet at the bottom of the Vistula River, in a world of dreams. What the lonely women carry overlaps despite differences in time and place, and sinks deeper and deeper. This work is based on the old Polish fairy tale “The Mermaid of Warsaw” and the work of the same name, “The Blue Castle,” written by author Lucy Maud Montgomery.

back number’s music video for “Aru Mirai yori Ai o Komete” was produced by qootain. The concept was jointly developed by back number’s Iyoru Shimizu and qootain’s Yukika Kawahara. Centered on the theme of “love and kindness” that embraces people’s regrets and suffering, this warm story was created using a variety of animation techniques.
