Profile
Born in the United States and raised in Japan, I have developed my identity through experiencing Japan’s nature, culture, climate, and people from both within and outside the country, cultivating a perspective that is both intimate and objective. Having progressed to directing through the steps of creating sound, capturing images, and shaping visuals, I am able to take a holistic view of the entire production process and engage in every stage of filmmaking.

Corey Fuller Break Ensemble × Synichi Yamamoto | MUTEK.JP

Description: This is the live performance by Corey Fuller Break Ensemble, which fully recreated Corey Fuller’s electronic ambient album “Break” in ensemble form at WWW Shibuya in 2019. This acoustic performance was presented again as an audiovisual live show at MUTEK.JP in 2020, in collaboration with Synichi Yamamoto. Sound signals from the main parts, such as bass and piano, were received in parallel from the PA and used to drive TouchDesigner parameters, creating unique visuals in real time. Rather than using a subjective expression of feelings such as healing, which are themes in Corey’s work, the piece was deliberately composed from an objective perspective.

We participated in ALTERNATIVE KYOTO, an art festival held across various locations in Kyoto. At Muko Shrine, a historic shrine in Muko City, Kyoto Prefecture that houses Important Cultural Properties, we reconfigured Corey Fuller’s 2020 work “Sanctuary” into an installation on a 12 × 3 m LED screen. In the serene space of the shrine after sunset, the ambient work, with its slowly transforming vivid landscapes, created a warm and soothing atmosphere. The space drew not only fans of digital art, but also families and local residents, who spent long periods watching the ambient work as time passed gently. Rather than an interactive or surprise-driven piece, it proposed an ambient, chill-out perspective, inviting viewers to gaze at the landscape from a bird’s-eye view.

Calligrapher Mariko Kinoshita’s inscription of a passage from Kamo no Chomei’s *Hōjōki* is divided into squares and redefined as “fragments.” Film artist Shinichi Yamamoto assigns a time axis to those cells using a unique algorithm, while musician Corey Fuller layers an ambient soundscape built from deconstructed and reconstructed readings of *Hōjōki*, creating a multilayered interplay among the three artists’ expressions. Blending Japanese views of life and death—such as “ku” (emptiness), “engi” (dependent origination), and silence—with a meta perspective on observing landscapes, the work becomes a weighty video poem that explores universality dwelling within impermanence. First unveiled in 2019 across the outdoor large-scale digital billboards of Shinjuku, it continued to evolve and in 2020 was expanded into an immersive spatial presentation at “ETERNAL ART SPACE” in Haneda Airport. In 2024, for its exhibition at Immersive Museum TOK (Shinjuku), it was reconfigured for a vast space of approximately 430㎡ and 6 meters in height. As fragments of calligraphy overlapped geometrically with waves and graphics, it was elevated into an immersive experience as a “reconstructed modern Zen garden,” drawing viewers into a serene spiritual world.
