Profile
A creative team formed in 1999. They regard client work as commissioned work, and continue to present fresh, experimental pieces across a wide range of media. They have a clear concept: to deliver viewers an unexpected and uncanny emotional experience through a style that remains fresh and singular even over time. They share this concept within the team under the term “iwakan” (a sense of unease or dissonance), and in recent years their activities have also been reappraised as contemporary art. In 2014, the fast-paced picture-story work “Anzen Unten no Shiori” was selected as a Jury Recommended Work at the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival. In 2019, “New Tribe / Powder” was nominated for the Commissioned Films category at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Since 2019, they have served as visiting professor at Kyoto University of the Arts. In 2020, Creephype’s “Ai Su” was selected as a Jury Recommended Work at the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival. Major solo exhibitions include “9th ANNIVERSARY Iruka no Irukakun no Kyushu no Meigetsu-ten” (2019), “Kyu-etsu - Transmorph -” (2020), “Iruka no Iruka no Iruka no Iruka no Iruka no Iruka no Iruka no Iruka no Iruka-ten” (2021), “Iwakanize-ten” (2022), and “MoBA - Contemporary Art Museum Exhibition -” (2022).

A mini-segment within the anime Pop Team Epic. Following the first season released in 2018, this work is the second season. An omnibus format featuring multiple filmmakers. While based on the original work, it was produced with an emphasis on developing a distinct style. In Episode 7, “Rising Hell: Hellshake Yano,” which AC-bu handled in its entirety, the work is an experimental piece shot in a single live-action take using about 20 sketchbooks, despite being an animated production. In addition, the Pop Team Epic anime changes voice actors between the first 15 minutes and the latter 15 minutes, and Episode 7 also drew attention because one voice actor—the legendary Japanese voice actor Koichi Yamadera—performed all roles.

This work is set in 2020, a year in which, due to the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), not only the Olympics but also many activities and events around the world were restricted. Its theme is the “Great Cosmic Robot Festival,” created to honor the disappointment of all the festivals, celebrations, and events that regrettably had to be canceled. In addition, this work is inspired by Japanese festivals. Festival culture, rooted in the history and traditions of local communities, has continued for about 400 years, carrying a variety of wishes such as “a bountiful harvest,” “family safety,” and “disaster prevention prayers” to protect against earthquakes, epidemics, and other calamities. Its form varies from region to region: in some places, people dance while praying to the gods; in others, they carry portable shrines and parade through the town. What they all share, however, is a wish for peace. However, in 2020, almost all festivals and ceremonies were canceled, including those whose origins lay in driving away epidemics. This music video contains BATTLES’ and AC-bu’s wish to replace the festivals that were unfortunately canceled, and to give courage and hope to music fans and festival organizers around the world, allowing them to enjoy themselves even just a little.

I got a very interesting long liner note from Powder himself, and the story was inspired by that. The main concept is based on a social-satirical image of the Tsukiji Market relocation issue, which was a problem in Japan, and it aims to convey as abstractly as possible the idea of being forced to make decisions in your own mind, and in a world where we tend to think in terms of just two choices, yes or no, updating our sense of things by asking whether there might be a new path rather than denying either side—that is New Tribe!
