Profile
Born in Tokyo in 1998. After studying live-action filmmaking and animation production in the United States, he is now based in Tokyo again, working primarily as an animator and experimental filmmaker. With the cinematic act of isolating fragments of the world within the frame and seeking to understand the laws of the world and of time through visual focus at the core of his artistic practice, he strives to create genre-defying works through a variety of methods and experimental approaches. His practice centers on the ghosts that continually haunt living beings as they move through the unceasing flow of time—past, present, and future alike—as well as on cinema as a means of giving those ghosts a permanent form, and on the spectral nature inherent in the medium of film itself. His latest animated film, Ukinejima, received the Best Animation Award at three international short film festivals in Rome, New York, and Munich, and the Shinji Ohmaki Award at SICF22. In the same year, he performed for the first time as a VJ at Mutek, the festival of electronic music, in collaboration with musician Lemna.

You and I are lying once again atop a train that has just begun to move. The cold night wind brushing against our skin grows gradually stronger and sharper. With a voice I had long since forgotten, you speak to me. “But we have to think about how to live together in different ways.” I stare intently at your face. That familiar, nostalgic face I knew so well. I may be holding your hand, and perhaps we are lying atop two different trains running side by side. You open your mouth again, but your words sink into the roaring wind. A white haze is illuminating the eastern horizon.

A Dewy World There is a photograph taken on the day I first came home after being born. My grandfather is sitting there, gazing intently at me as I sleep in my futon as a baby. Twenty years later, one night I had a strange dream. When I opened my eyes in the dream, my grandfather was lying right beside me. His sparse beard was so vividly clear that it seemed I could touch it if I reached out my hand. I stared at my grandfather in the dream, as he seemed to be sleeping peacefully.
