Package footage used for a late-night music selection program on Space Shower TV. The graphics and motion were created with the flicker phenomenon that appears when viewing things like health information late at night through a screen as their motif.

Through water, the water server brand “Aqua Clara,” which supports daily life, the environment, and health, and “HERALBONY,” a creative company that aims to reshape perceptions of disability and create new culture from welfare and inclusion, come together. In this concept film born from the collaboration between the two companies, the production process of the original designer, Kaede Wajima, was incorporated into the visuals, and the film was created using origami and paper cutting as its central motifs.

We produced a station ID for SPACE SHOWER TV. In addition to using risograph printing throughout, we layered different types of paper like a cut-paper collage.

This stop-motion animation was created by printing digitally produced graphics and filming them one frame at a time. It uses a risograph, a type of silkscreen printing machine, and six kinds of paper with distinctive textures. When printed with a risograph, irregularities and misalignments occur in the prints. In the film, these factors created a unique feel and texture. As a result, the visuals of the data created digitally and the printed data changed significantly. This phenomenon can be applied to “information.” For a single fact, different outputs—such as the angle from which it is framed or the way it is communicated—can create inconsistencies and shifts in impression even when the content is the same. In addition, when information passes through the filters of the receiver’s emotions, culture, and stance, an entirely different interpretation is ultimately produced. These are not negative things, but positive elements that generate new visual forms and interpretations. Isn’t ambiguity, rather than black or white, the diversity required in the coming era? This film translates such ideas into visual expression and has been completed as a work that suits the new post-COVID era.

Method: Risograph printing and stop-motion I adopted “stop-motion animation using risograph printing,” a technique I have been experimentally producing independently since around 2019, as the visual expression method for this work. By handling the footage physically, I was able to introduce a level of flexibility that digital methods do not allow, such as using different types of paper for each scene, which was a major gain from this production. Concept: “Life during the COVID-19 pandemic” In Video Creators 100, which presents representative creators for each year, what kind of year was 2021? I set this theme because I wanted to preserve it as a visual record. One year has passed since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. I am writing this text on May 29, 2021. The third state of emergency, which was initially supposed to last two weeks, has been extended by about another month and a half. In 2021, the infectious disease is still spreading, and the new lifestyle has become more deeply rooted. I think it has become normal for many people to enjoy entertainment through a screen. While continuing to stay at home, meetings, live events, and drinking parties have all been replaced by monitors. The present is what keeps and extends our lives through the screen, and I condensed 2021 into a teaser video with the hope for the future—that one day COVID will subside and we will be able to go বাইরে outside again.

Miraikan, National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, 5F Permanent Exhibition “Even Dust Adds Up to Change the World - Exploring the Universe, Earth, and Life” An exhibition themed around fundamental science that seeks to uncover the origins of the universe, Earth, and life. Using six projectors and three speakers, we created a continuous audiovisual space that synchronizes and transforms over time. A vision of the world that expands endlessly and is continually renewed, from the micro to the macro. The history of science has advanced through an insatiable curiosity about the world. The questions of basic science reach into a world that is both primordial and vast. Here, rather than presenting cutting-edge scientific technology in the manner of a technical book, we designed the facade of the exhibition area, as well as the introduction and epilogue, so that visitors could experience it imaginatively as an extension of the gaze toward the world that everyone had as a child.
