Last Resort is a video team composed of Ayumu Arisaka, Mai Oita, and Ren Kohata, whose work awakens humanity’s primordial memories. Formed in 2010, the team creates organic motion-driven visual works by blending hand-drawn animation with stop-motion animation using people, large-scale props, and practical objects.

Focusing on a “brain-pleasing experience,” this traditional neighborhood bathhouse, familiar to everyone, was dramatically updated through the power of creativity. With an array of devices and staging—from mind-blowing neon lights and illumination to riddles and underwater speakers—it offered a one-of-a-kind “new bathing experience of light and madness” that could only be enjoyed in this place. In the lobby, exclusive “Nojiru Sento” merchandise, as well as limited-edition drinks and food, were also available for purchase. Over the 10-day event period, a total of 4,457 people experienced it, and in the visitor survey, about 93.3% of respondents answered “Yes, I got brain juice!” to the question, “Did you get brain juice?” Following “Henkai Yokocho,” it concluded to great acclaim and overwhelming success.

Method: Stop motion I created this piece while sharing backgrounds and characters with Moji Tsuchiya, each of us imitating the other’s characters. Tsuchiya created the basic storyboard, and we worked out the overall feel of the film by sharing the footage as it was completed. There is a Go scene in the video, and it felt like we were making it while watching each other’s moves, as though I were playing Go with Tsuchiya.

Description: Yaeji arranged the ringtone for Samsung’s GALAXY S23, and Lately Hands was in charge of the music video. Technique: Stop motion The grains of the music are expressed as characters. The music created by Yaeji—the characters—drift above the city, split apart, come back together somewhere else, and blend into the streets. It evokes the image of music seeping into everyday life, scenery, and the air. The film was shot by combining city structures with characters made from flat paper. It is an experimentally produced work.

At the foot of Mount Nyotai, a spring wells up in a peering dry well, and Jizō returns with a frog. In the galaxy’s homeland, a masquerade in a brimful spring (lotion). A kaleidoscope peeks, and inside is Jizō. The frog is blessed and reborn as undergarments, transcending dimensions. This video was created to commemorate the collaboration between TENGA and Saigo no Shudan. As the fifth installment of “TXA-TENGA by Artist-,” a project in which TENGA Co., Ltd. creates apparel, goods, and other products together with artists, four collaborative items were released with Saigo no Shudan.

In a survey of people who got jobs after graduating from high school, about half of those from households with an annual income of 3.88 million yen or less said that “financial reasons made it difficult to go on to higher education.” Since 2020, a support system for higher education enrollment has also been in place for low-income households. “I want to learn, but I can’t. Isn’t that kind of wrong?”

Although 15-year-old girls in Japan rank among the top in academic performance in math and science among OECD countries, the proportion of girls who go on to university or enter math- and science-related fields is low compared with other OECD countries. Among the things said with “because you’re a girl,” there are also forms of “benevolent discrimination.” “I want to learn, but I can’t. Doesn’t that seem kind of wrong?”

Description: I received a long letter from Mr. Shijin describing the rich life his family leads deep in the mountains, and I created this piece while imagining that way of life. He said it was made with the image of a “sound baby,” so I didn’t think about it too deeply; instead, I made a video that would leave babies with a sense of wonder, excitement, and a little fear when they watch it, something that stimulates the senses through sight and touch. It was produced using stop-motion and line-drawing animation.
