A visual work created to convey the story of the Japan Heritage site “Tatsuta Ancient Road and Kamenose,” weaving together the landscape of the Tatsuta Ancient Road in the Nara period with local legends handed down since that time. The “Tatsuta Ancient Road” was developed as Japan’s first official road connecting Yamato (Nara) and Kawachi (Osaka) from the Asuka period onward, and in the Nara period in particular it was known as a road traveled by emperors and government officials that played an important role in the nation’s development. Through pixel animation, it meticulously recreates the processions of imperial visits, the dragon said to have descended on Mt. Goza, and the natural scenery depicted in Manyoshu poems.

Miraikan, National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, 5F Permanent Exhibition “Even Dust Adds Up to Change the World - Exploring the Universe, Earth, and Life” An exhibition themed around fundamental science that seeks to uncover the origins of the universe, Earth, and life. Using six projectors and three speakers, we created a continuous audiovisual space that synchronizes and transforms over time. A vision of the world that expands endlessly and is continually renewed, from the micro to the macro. The history of science has advanced through an insatiable curiosity about the world. The questions of basic science reach into a world that is both primordial and vast. Here, rather than presenting cutting-edge scientific technology in the manner of a technical book, we designed the facade of the exhibition area, as well as the introduction and epilogue, so that visitors could experience it imaginatively as an extension of the gaze toward the world that everyone had as a child.

Pixel animation inspired by the Important Cultural Property “Battle of Sekigahara Folding Screen” (held by the Osaka Museum of History), believed to have been painted in the early 17th century. The battle scenes depicted on the screen are overlaid with the natural scenery that still remains at the former battlefield today, and reimagined as an animation. This spatially composed video installation uses six large monitors and six directional speakers, with intricately crafted pixel animation like a work of art. It presents a contemporary reinterpretation of the folding screen, which, while being a painting, was at the same time a sculptural and spatial device. Produced as part of the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ cultural promotion project “Culture Gate to Japan,” it was unveiled at Chubu Centrair International Airport. It is now on permanent display at the Gifu Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum.
