- Profile
- ACCI BABA (Atsushi Baba, born in 1977 in Kamakura, Kanagawa, Japan) is a Japanese visual artist, contemporary artist, and filmmaker based in Berlin, Germany. He creates works centered on time-based media using video, as well as installations. His practice is characterized by works that present new perspectives and provoke thought through worldviews in which “reality and fantasy” and “past and future” interweave. Influenced by his mother, a calligrapher, he was strongly drawn to the aesthetics of the East from an early age. While still in high school, a storyboard he created was selected in the MTV Station ID Contest, which inspired him to pursue a career in video. While attending university, he learned the fundamentals of artistic expression through stage visual direction for MEDIA DRIVE UNIT cell/66b, and expanded his practice across contemporary performance, advertising, music videos, and VJ work. In 2007, he relocated to Berlin and devoted himself fully to his artistic career. In addition to collaborating with artists from a wide range of fields, including Yui Kawaguchi, Helena Waldmann, Mohammad Mortezavi, and Michael Saup, he has presented numerous works through solo and group exhibitions. His recent works have received international acclaim as contemporary art, media art, and experimental film, and have been officially selected and exhibited in more than ten countries, including the Los Angeles Film Festival (2004), Japan Media Arts Festival (2010), Ars Electronica Festival (2015), European Media Arts Festival (2017), and The Lumen Prize (2017). Since April 2019, he has served as a Specially Appointed Professor at Keio University SFC.
