Working since the 1980s, ∈Y∋'s output has influenced and shaped experimental music in his native Japan and across the globe. From noise and psychedelia to performance art and visual art, ∈Y∋'s career is a collage of creative mischief and devilish collaborations. He has performed with the iconic Sonic Youth, on John Zorn’s Naked City (1990), and with the influential South Korean artist Nam June Paik, among many others. Expect a face-melting and mind-warping audiovisual battery as the mutant cyberkinetic noise of ∈Y∋ is combined with the rampant visuals of C.O.L.O from Osaka’s Cosmic Lab to birth an immersive audiovisual performance. Through projects such as FINALBY( ) with ∈Y∋, C.O.L.O has developed integrated systems in which visual structures generate and shape sound, treating audio and image as a single, inseparable medium to create site-specific, transformative experiences.

Signage content installed at MUFG Bank’s new concept store, “M’s Square TAKANAWA.” We joined the project from the planning stage and were responsible for direction. Rather than taking a conventional advertising approach, the piece was created around the concept of a visual experience that would make passersby stop and take notice. Using a transparent display device, we designed the content as a generative visual expression in which the imagery changes in real time according to live foreign exchange data, allowing financial information to be perceived in a visual and intuitive way.

A music video work created for the AI creative contest “Corotech supported by LIVE DAM WAO!” hosted by the Nippon Columbia Group (NCG) on February 21–22, 2026. Starting from my own sense of motion graphics, all motifs were individually generated by AI as video assets for chroma key use, then constructed through compositing and synthesis. Rather than generating everything at once, the video was structurally designed through a process of generating, selecting, placing, and animating each element as separate assets. Within the context of an AI contest, I deliberately chose a time-consuming production method in an effort to imbue the video with “brushstrokes” and “life” that cannot be achieved through one-shot generation. Rather than relying on AI’s generative power alone, this work explores the possibilities of expression through collaboration between AI and humans by selecting, composing, and assigning relationships to the materials through human intent. Instead of presenting AI’s inorganic output as is, it aims to create an emotionally resonant visual expression by reconstructing it through human intervention.

A music video created entirely in full CG. Built around the guitar as its central motif, the visual world was constructed from its form and presence. Assuming the piece to be instrumental, the visuals were designed not around the meaning of lyrics, but around the structure, texture, and energy of the sound itself. The dynamics, rhythm, and spatial breadth of the music are visualized through the deformation of forms, light, and motion. Through motion graphics design in Cinema 4D and Redshift, along with highly precise lighting and rendering, we created a full-CG expression in which sound and image are directly connected.

Based on the images inspired by the music, original hand-drawn illustrations were created for each scene and used to construct the music video. The movement within the video was built from those original drawings, incorporating AI technology while preserving the texture and nuances of the hand-drawn work as it was developed into moving images. In addition, these original drawings were compiled into a ZINE as part of the artist’s own body of work and exhibited at “Here is ZINE Tokyo #22,” held in Aoyama, Tokyo, in February 2026. Rather than stopping at completion as a video work, the project expands its world by translating the original drawings born during the production process into an analog medium, crossing the boundary between moving image and printed matter. Starting from the traces of hand drawing, this project developed into a distinctive artwork that moves back and forth between analog and digital through a process that unfolds from still images into time-based expression. This is an original video work created inspired by Roniit’s song “Purify.” Using CG, I expressed the themes of “life that is born and then fades away” and “a world that is magnificent and beautiful, yet somehow tinged with fragility and irrationality.” A single star is born in a sterile space. The life that emerges from it encounters other forms of life, collides with them, undergoes chemical reactions, and eventually disappears— this entire process is depicted abstractly from the perspective of an unemotional third party. While centering on my strengths in 3DCG and VFX, I also experimentally incorporated AI technology at certain points, blending them together in a subtle way. I made this video with pure feelings as a fan of Roniit, and I was truly delighted to receive a message from Roniit through social media, and even more so to have it shared by them. It has become a very precious work to me.

Music video for “Color Passion,” the May 2025 learning song from NHK E-Tele’s “The Wakey Show.” This song is performed by a character named “Marigool,” who is well versed in art, with the theme of “a song that teaches you how to mix paint colors.” Using a puppetry technique known in Japan as “face-revealing puppet manipulation,” which is still relatively unfamiliar there, the production was directed with a focus on making both the puppets and the human performers look wonderful. An image-based video work centered on Atami and the surrounding areas, the setting of the TV anime Clean Freak! Aoyama-kun, composed from live-action footage. Over three days of filming in Atami, time-lapse shots and snapshots were meticulously gathered from early morning until sunset. By carefully editing and compositing this vast collection of cuts built around the keyword “beautiful” in accordance with the rhythm and flow of emotion, the work creates a visual experience in which everyday scenery gradually takes on color and seems to synchronize with one’s inner feelings.

A music video created based on a song inspired by photographer Munehide Ida’s photo book “EXPRESSWAY.” In this work, depth maps were generated from Munehide Ida’s photographs to give them three-dimensional movement, challenging the idea of “photographs coming to life once again.” While actively embracing the characteristics of the source material, including blur and noise, the piece intricately synchronizes them with piano sounds evoking a camera shutter and fast-paced developments. Through a unique approach, it reconstructs the tension and sense of speed inherent in the “moment” captured in photographs taken while driving on the Shuto Expressway at 100 km/h.

Please exercise caution when viewing, and if you feel any discomfort, stop watching immediately. -- This is a motion graphics MV created under the concept of “making an MV that tricks the viewer for an instant.” Starting from the now-familiar composition often seen in recent vocaloid song MVs—an illustration placed against a single-color background—the moment the drop begins, the illustrated Teto Kasane opens her eyes and the background starts moving violently as well, drawing the viewer into the music through the sudden shift in tone. To create visuals that could stand up to a song driven by passionate feelings riding on a powerful beat, we incorporated plenty of data-like grime such as noise and moshing, and built the piece around motion graphics that still maintain a pleasing visual appearance.

When I heard the band’s image for the piece, I decided to build it from the feelings I had in my own youth. I directed it with the intention of turning those everyday moments from back then, and the emotions that strangely remain when you look back on them, into the visuals as they are. The apples that appear in the work are a visual expression of memories of youth. For me, youth is strongly connected to cinema as well, so I’ve also included a few slightly film-like scenes and ways of showing them here and there. By using an old compact digital camera and having the cast actually take some of the shots themselves, I think I was able to create a texture that feels close to the perspective and memories of the people who were there.

Description: At some point in time, humanity vanished from Earth in an instant. Countless pieces of space debris are scattered across Earth’s orbit. Among that debris, an optical disc happens to slip into a player, and the track begins to play. The thoughts left within the music take on the physical phenomenon of vibration and rain down upon the Earth. Parabolic antennas on the ground listen to the vibrations, and radio towers transmit radio waves of their own accord. Signage in an abandoned city displays the performer’s image, obscured by noise, while a three-dimensional hologram is projected onto a sandy beach. Waves gently brush against feet, and a semi-transparent body traces out the choreography. A roadside cathode-ray tube set bears a face mottled with static, hallucinating seven figures who should not be there. When the track ends, the player ejects the optical disc. The Earth glows, and the debris continues to circle in orbit.

Commentary: In representing Mr. Nagase, who exists across the dimensions of media, what I had in mind was to show the moment of crossing between dimensions. The passage back and forth between dimensions gradually accelerates, until eventually it crosses dimensions frame by frame. So rapid that the temporal arrangement can be mistaken for spatial contact, and with a movement of flicker that is too fast to stop and yet seems to stand still, the translucent body placed within it can touch you on the retina, between frame and frame. The haze that only becomes visible through motion was also fitting for a melody that feels as if carved out of a raging current—or perhaps written automatically—gentle / eerie / light. Listen to the blur, like a lump of light, with your eyes and ears.
