Snake Line A video installation by filmmaker Shinichi Yamamoto and musician Tetsuji Ohno (Intercity-Express). Set at the biotope located at the edge of the forest within the expansive grounds of Nagaoka Institute of Design, the work features a 20-meter screen constructed from 40 connected LED displays. Positioned at the forest's margin — visible from the campus buildings — it unfolds amid the falling leaves of late autumn. From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., the work continuously shifts in response to the changing quality of daylight, rain, and the darkness of night reflected across the water's surface. Emitting vivid, high-saturation color, the installation neither confronts nor overwhelms its natural surroundings, but settles quietly into the landscape. The sound, composed by Ohno, builds an ambient sonic environment rooted in field recordings of a suikinkutsu — a traditional Japanese water instrument. Snake Line was produced as part of VideoListening, a media art program directed by Shinichi Yamamoto.

I worked on the motion graphics for "HILLS SAKURA JOURNEY," a cherry blossom festival event held across five Hills locations, including Roppongi Hills, Azabudai Hills, and Toranomon Hills, hosted by Mori Building Co., Ltd. — one of Japan’s leading urban development companies. The video was composed with the light, graceful movement of cherry blossom petals and vivid, eye-catching transitions. As an advertising video for the event campaign, it was shown on signage inside the Hills facilities, on the event website, and on social media.

”Exploration 1: Studies for Naked-Eye 3D Vision” is the first installment of an in-house research project by SUNJUNJIE focused on the media characteristics of naked-eye 3D vision. In this work, we explored what kinds of video-based advertising expressions are possible by making use of the medium’s characteristics, such as creating a sense of depth through optical illusions, movements that catch the attention of passersby, visual composition, and sound design. As smartphones have become more widespread, advertising expression has increasingly taken on the aspect of a medium closely integrated into everyday life. In advertising expression, we believe it is always important to pursue a balance between people’s everyday world and the fictional stories being presented. To make this project feel more realistic, we felt it necessary to express its world not through a fictitious client but through an actual brand product, so we approached the fragrance brand “SINN PURETE” with a collaboration proposal. We discussed the video planning with the collaborator and decided to create two 15-second movies, each based on a different theme, in order to explore the greatest possible range of expression on a low budget. The first film expresses the world of SINN PURETE through its three product lines. The second film merges SINN PURETE’s mascot character with the world of SUNJUNJIE, aiming for a pop and humorous expression that feels distinctly Tokyo. The creative elements we challenged ourselves to include were how to create a striking 3D pop-out effect, and the selection of objects and movements that would be interesting when they emerge from the screen. Since not everyone watches a video from the beginning, we aimed to capture attention from any point of entry, while creating a sense of controlled busyness rather than mere chaos. In particular, we paid close attention to the design of the framing structure, the imagined depth, the actual size of the billboard, and the relationship between viewing distance and scale.

In particular, we paid close attention to the design of the stage-like framework, imagined depth, the actual size of the billboard, and the relationship to the viewing distance.

This work involved many new approaches in both music and visuals, but by communicating closely with Haruyoshi, we were able to create something satisfying. (?) To create the animation, we first needed reference material for the instruments, so we started by making 3D models in Blender. The drawings were done in monochrome, and in the final stage we applied a correction called a gradient map so that they would end up in two colors. The instruments while being played are animated by compositing in 3D models. The storyboard was a collaborative effort, and it was fun to come up with so many interesting directing ideas. Please exercise caution when viewing, and if you feel any discomfort, stop watching immediately. -- This is a motion graphics MV created under the concept of “making an MV that tricks the viewer for an instant.” Starting from the now-familiar composition often seen in recent vocaloid song MVs—an illustration placed against a single-color background—the moment the drop begins, the illustrated Teto Kasane opens her eyes and the background starts moving violently as well, drawing the viewer into the music through the sudden shift in tone. To create visuals that could stand up to a song driven by passionate feelings riding on a powerful beat, we incorporated plenty of data-like grime such as noise and moshing, and built the piece around motion graphics that still maintain a pleasing visual appearance.

TV anime “Zenshu.” ED theme A video work combining illustration, UI design, and live action. -- The illustrator was kawa. Using a color-specified line draft, often seen in key animation production, as one of the looks, we prepared three different looks along with line art and coloring. We delicately visualized the process through which a work is created, and the life of its creator, by weaving live action into the imagery. All live-action footage was shot by going out myself, and from the cold winter dawn to sunset, I captured spaces that conveyed a sense of warmth. With assistance from Jaga (SHIFTZ), who is well versed in live-action filming, we shot aimlessly while searching for “everyday yet powerful landscapes” that suit this song. -- We created this work with a single-minded desire to deliver the struggles and joys of creation to everyone who creates, or is about to begin creating.

The outline of life’s existence is not the boundary of the physical body, but something ambiguous that also includes the environment continuous with it. As long as life is alive, it dissipates energy and moves the surrounding environment, such as the air. This work depicts the existence of a flock of birds through the energy the flock has given to the world. The existence called “I” is the mind, the body, and the environment continuous with them. A pebble, and things that humans have made up to now, have stable structures in and of themselves. Life, however, is different. A pebble will continue to exist even if it is placed in a sealed box cut off from the outside world, but life cannot maintain its existence when placed in such a closed box. Life is like a vortex born in the sea. A vortex is an existence within a flow, and the boundaries of its existence are ambiguous. In fact, a vortex is in a steady state, yet continues to writhe and appears like a single powerful living being. A vortex is not something that maintains a stable structure on its own; it is created by water continuously flowing from outside the vortex to inside it, and from inside to outside, and its structure is sustained by that flow. Life, too, takes in matter and energy from outside as food, releases matter, and dissipates energy outward while building an ordered structure. In other words, the structure of life is formed not by life itself, but by the environment continuous with it. Life is a miraculous phenomenon that arises in the flow of an open world, and like a vortex in the sea, it exists within an infinite continuum, with ambiguous boundaries to its existence. Description: On a night of heavy rain, the rain falling on the grasslands becomes a work of art. Countless masses of light float in the air. Each mass of light is composed of two colors, with the boundary between the colors clearly separated as if it were solid. These masses of light, with sharply defined color boundaries unlike anything seen in nature, arise from extreme synchronization. Synchronization can be said to be the result of a synchronization phenomenon, a form of self-organization along the axis of time that creates large structures with order. When you touch a mass of light, you realize that what you had been seeing was part of the rain falling continuously without interruption. Life is like a fleeting crystal of light, a miraculous solidification within a continuum of energy that has kept flowing without interruption from a past whose beginning we cannot know. A Responsive Universe Dwelling in a Tabunoki Tree

According to various studies, in forests, trees are connected to one another through networks of mycorrhizal fungi, recognizing each other and exchanging nutrients. At the center of this coexistence and mutual support are large, long-lived trees. Forest ecologist Suzanne Simard calls such large trees mother trees. When a person approaches the tree, the nearest sphere glows brightly and emits a tone. The surrounding spheres respond one after another, continuing in sequence as they glow and sound. The tree is a tabunoki, a Japanese bay tree. In the poem “Iso no ue no tsumama o mireba ne o hae te toshifukakarashi kami sabinikeri” from the Man'yōshū, the oldest existing anthology of Japanese poetry, compiled from the late 7th century to the late 8th century, the word “tsumama” is said to refer to the tabunoki. The meaning is: “Looking at tsumama on the seaside rocks, it seems to have spread its roots far and lived many years. It has become divine.” Even 1,200 years ago, people may have felt a sense of mystery when seeing roots extending far into the forest as a whole. Description: An art piece created as the "Sea Room" at the Museum of Inhomogeneous Nature and People, located within Nagasaki Bana Resort Campground in Bungotakada City, Oita Prefecture, using water-drop projection mapping. By combining a water-drop fountain performance by Water Pearl Co., Ltd. with an ultra-high-speed projector from Tokyo Electron Device Limited, the work achieves precise projection mapping onto a continuous stream of falling water droplets. This new technology, which has been patented internationally, makes it possible to display animations that smoothly move individual water droplets up and down—something that could not be achieved with conventional Water Pearl installations using strobe lighting. These water droplets are real water that can be touched.

One of the interactive artworks created around the theme of engaging with nature and expanding physicality, housed in the “Museum of Inhospitable Nature and Human,” established in Bungotakada City, Oita Prefecture. This work is conceived as a room where visitors can play with sunlight. As visitors walk through the room, the small openings in the ceiling automatically open and close, enveloping their bodies in light, while the patches of sunlight on the floor constantly change shape, like the waxing and waning of the moon, in response to the opening and closing of those openings. The viewer’s position is detected by sensors, and only the small openings on the side facing the sun are activated. In addition, the interior is adjusted by analyzing weather data from the Japan Meteorological Agency, so that the most suitable effect is produced at any given moment: on sunny days, mist fills the room and shafts of light can be seen streaming down to the floor. Moreover, piano notes sound when the small openings open, and a piano piece is performed as visitors walk through the room. In this work, the technology is not directly presented; instead, it is used solely to capture sunlight and deliver it directly onto the viewer’s skin, allowing them to feel nature. Rather than artificial light, natural light is delivered to the viewer, evoking not only sight but also the warmth that light holds, and designed to sharpen the senses and awareness of those who experience it.

科学は「なぜ？」と疑問を持ち、空想を膨らませて仮説を立て、仮説を信じて実験を繰り返すことで進展します。 福岡市科学館の基本展示室に入る前に、あらゆることを疑問に思い空想する準備運動をしてもらいたいと思い制作したのが「発見の壁」です。「この絵をを触るとどうなるのだろう？」、「この絵は何を意味しているのだろう？」と好奇心を持って探索してもらうために、科学史上の出来事や科学的事象をモチーフにアニメーション作家の自由な発想で、たくさんの面白い仕掛けをコンテンツに潜ませました。 レリーフをタッチするとそれらの科学と空想が楽しいアニメーションになって飛び出します。それぞれが繋り、相互作用し、やがては「なぜ？」という疑問へ集約されます。

《時空間のしっぽ》は、時空間という概念を体験するためのアート作品として制作されました。 ミンコフスキーの光円錐によって、私達は常に光の速度で未来へ広がる可能性の地平を­見つめながら現地点に存在しています。作品の空間の中央に置かれた『時空間のしっぽ』に触れると、時空間という概念において、自分がどのように現在の地点へ到達したのか、その軌跡を見ることができます。 空間は前方に置かれたセンサによって3次元スキャンされており、過去と現在の空間の位置を比較することで、まるで過去の自分が現在の自分と同じ空間内に存在するかのように見える映像をリアルタイムに生成しています。 映像演出による時空間の操作は、「バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー」を始めとするSF映画や、ドラえもんなどの漫画、あるいはノーマン・マクラーレン「Canon」、ズビグニュー・リプチンスキー「Tango」、ミシェル・ゴンドリーによるカイリー・ミノーグのMV「Come Into My World」といった実験映像によって実現されてきました。ただ、それが実際に「どんな体験なのか」は今まで空想するしかありませんでした。 人は空想をすることで、現実の世界を新しい形で捉え、変えていくことができます。時空間という概念は非常に新しい概念ですが、この概念の登場よって私達の世界の捉え方も大きく変わってきました。《時空間のしっぽ》はまだ映像の中での体験ですが、今後技術の発展とともに、それが実空間に飛び出すことも遠くないのではないかと思います。時空間を肌で体験することができる先には、どのような世界が広がっているのか、楽しみです。
