A short anime that takes a peek into the daily lives of the staff working at the ward office in the fictional Chitoku Town Village’s “Hodora Ward” Hodoyoku! Word Office is a short anime aimed at civil servants working in local governments and public institutions. This series reunites director Takeshi Onaka, who teamed up about 10 years ago on Neko to Mata, with voice actors Tasuku Hatanaka and Takuma Nagatsuka. In a time when attitudes toward “what a watch should be” and “how we engage with time” are undergoing significant change, we conducted interviews with 25 members of CITIZEN’s Design Department about their thoughts on “making watches,” and produced this film based on those recordings. The audio data will be preserved as an in-house archive at CITIZEN Watch for the next 100 years. This film was created to convey to as many people as possible the meaning of making watches, which is the core of the company’s business, as well as the passion behind watchmaking for CITIZEN’s future.

With the renewal of the recruitment website for Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo, a long-established hotel with over 70 years of history, we produced three types of videos: background footage for the recruitment site, a recruitment concept movie, and a 15-minute vision movie. Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo has been building its history alongside its lush gardens. By connecting scenes of employees at work and interviews from various departments—such as front desk clerks, guest room service, sales planning, and culinary staff—who embody the spirit of hospitality every day, we aimed to create a vision movie that thoughtfully conveys to applicants the values Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo holds dear, as well as the appeal of working there. For the video that plays in the background of the recruitment website, we focused on conveying the hotel’s one-of-a-kind scenery and the refined atmosphere that flows throughout the property, featuring the nature of the gardens, historic sites, and the distinctive design details found throughout Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo.

Rather than filming only the building itself, we wanted to create visuals that would also convey Mr. Sugimoto’s philosophy, so at the beginning we intercut imagery with Mr. Sugimoto’s striking words, creating a structure that broadens the viewer’s imagination, as if peeking slightly into Mr. Sugimoto’s own mind.

As Rei’s first independently produced performance, “Mokugeki” was planned and held at WALL&WALL on 2024/4/12. This performance was an attempt to reconstruct a concert of Japanese traditional instruments through direction, actively incorporating visual and lighting production. This is a reel of visuals used in live performance direction. I explored visual production as a lighting effect in a live setting. I experimented with creating visuals using a wide range of tools across genres, including live action, CG (Blender), simulations, audio-reactive systems (TouchDesigner, Resolume), and generative AI (Midjourney, Runway ML). In performances where shamisen parts are exchanged at high speed, manual operation with a controller could not keep up, so real-time visualization with TouchDesigner was effective.

“Earth as Seen from Space: A Culture” Inspired by music, this project visualizes the creative process of a Japanese dancer choreographing and a chef creating cuisine. This time, the theme is Daft Punk’s “Within.” Using CG, live action, and compositing, I created a video in which reality and unreality coexist. This is my first independently produced work. I used Polycam, Nomad Sculpt, Blender, Substance 3D Painter, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Firefly. The 3D models that appear were all modeled from scratch without using any assets. The slot symbols at the beginning of the work were generated using Adobe Firefly. Throughout the CG and live-action scenes, the footage was basically shot with a 50mm focal length. The props appearing in the work are compiled on the page below. “Gacha Life” Available on the short drama app [FANY:D]. [Synopsis] Sachiko Yamanoura (27), who works in the HR department of an IT company, has spent her days with a string of the world’s worst luck—stepping on gum, catching her boyfriend cheating, and more—until she finally died in a ninth freak accident, without a second thought. But in the afterlife, “Gacha Life,” a salvation awaits: she can spin a gacha and choose her next-life partner. As one after another of the men appear—dependable superiors, dangerous entrepreneurs, vanished fiancés, and other anything-but-straightforward types—Sachiko faces her own “luck” and searches for what true happiness really is. A fresh kind of fantastical romantic comedy, woven together from a fantastical setting and comedic developments. Before long, Sachiko finds herself forced to “interview” a colorful cast of men, including an ex she wants to break up with, an influencer, and a missing fiancé. Are the choices really nothing but duds, or is there a winner in the mix? Who, in the end, will she choose as her “partner in the next life”—? [Project Concept] “Gacha Life” is a work that explores the fundamental question, “Is life determined by luck?” by intertwining black comedy with serious human drama. At the heart of the story is the journey of the protagonist, Sachiko Yamanoura, as she reexamines the choices in her life through a system of chance called “gacha.” At the foundation of the story lies the theme, “Can fate really be changed?” Sachiko has long believed that she is “unlucky,” but is her misfortune truly due to luck? Or have her own choices and actions been drawing those outcomes to her? This work poses such questions to the audience. [Direction Policy] For this work, I wanted to depict fantasy and real emotions in exquisite balance. By contrasting the realism of the world we know with the abstract afterlife world of “Gacha Life,” the story gains greater depth. Gacha Life (the afterlife) is designed as a simple, symbolic space, with visuals that allow the audience to intuitively understand, “What’s going to happen here?” By incorporating lighting and game-like UI (user interface) elements, we emphasize the feeling of “being made to choose one’s fate.” Depictions of the real world use handheld camerawork and natural lighting to create a realistic, intimate atmosphere. This emphasizes the tangible feel of Sachiko’s life and makes it easier for the audience to empathize with her choices. Balance of humor Not too serious, but not too light either. Since the very premise of “gacha” is humorous, the characters’ reactions are portrayed realistically. Rather than making the audience feel, “This is something that happens only in fiction,” we want them to think, “Maybe something like this could actually happen?”

This 15-second piece was created for “JAA Omnibus: Infinite ∞ 15-Second Animation,” a segment of “Into Animation 8,” an event hosted by the Japan Animation Association (JAA), which Shota belongs to. Interpreting the theme “infinite ∞” in my own way, I handled everything myself, from coming up with the idea to creating the animation and composing the music, and completed it in less than one week in total. I worked on the rough sketches in CLIP STUDIO PAINT (iPad version) to check the motion. After that, I scanned drawings made on paper and finished the video using After Effects and Photoshop. The music was created by humming the idea into a melody and building on it with GarageBand. The vocals were also recorded from my own singing.

I participated in and created this work for the logo movie project “Hulu IDs” for the U.S. version of the streaming service Hulu. I aimed to create an animation style that was energetic and exciting above all else. The music was made together with a friend I have worked with since my student days. As for the singing, I wanted to create a Japanese song that people overseas could enjoy too, so I chose Japanese words whose pronunciation I found appealing, regardless of their meaning, and arranged them to fit the melody. Chugin Financial Group, which includes The Chugoku Bank headquartered in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, under its umbrella. With the mission of increasing long-term Chugin fans, we portrayed the changes within the Chugin Group through VFX and adapted them into a TV commercial and graphics.
 The challenge we were given this time was to “create long-term Chugin fans, especially among the younger generation.” In developing the concept, we conducted interviews in advance with more than 20 young employees across the Chugoku Bank, as well as other Chugin Financial Group companies. After organizing how the current Chugin brand is understood by employees, we pointed out the possibility that the headquarters’ efforts to reform its culture had not been fully communicated. Through repeated discussions with headquarters staff about the future Chugin aims to pursue from a long-term perspective, we decided to communicate the evolving Chugin both inside and outside the company using image-based visuals. In line with the project’s main copy, “Let’s give it a try,” we too took on our largest-ever scene construction challenge. In the first half of the story, we recreated as a time-lapse using 3DCG the moment when the Chugin Financial Group sign is raised from the former Chugoku Bank headquarters to the current headquarters building. We visited the Okayama Prefectural Library in person and collected materials spanning the past 50 years, then created 3D models of the streetscape around Chugin’s headquarters, including the surrounding distinctive buildings. Tradition is not the result of being preserved, but the result of continuing to change. And the grand, seemingly unchangeable landscape of today was also shaped by the accumulation of small challenges taken on by people in the past. To convey change, it is more effective not to declare that “we are changing,” but to capture and communicate the actual change itself. In the latter half of the film, we focused on the DX strategy that is already delivering results. After abstractly expressing Chugin’s evolution into a platformer connecting regional businesses through CG particles, we depict young employees energetically taking on challenges with digital devices, their supervisors encouraging and watching over their efforts, and young people at startups tackling innovation. As a regional bank, Chugin Financial Group only has meaning when it brings positive impact to the region through forward-looking initiatives. While leaving a strong impression of Chugin’s major step forward through visual expression using advanced techniques, we also conveyed that this is a change rooted in the local community and one that never forgets where it came from by closely capturing the regional people who appear in the work.

“Do not see the forest for the trees.” In this proverb, “trees” refers to a narrow perspective or the details of things, while “forest” refers to a broad perspective, the whole picture. Inspired by this proverb, we sought to give form to the process of actively shifting between perspectives and to the way this can create a more three-dimensional image. See the trees, see the forest, then see the trees again... This body of work is an installation that allows viewers to experience the moment when a one-sided image changes by moving back and forth between the fine-grained and the broad information symbolized by the “trees” and the “forest.” Each piece is equipped with an interface such as a knob, and by operating it, viewers can transform or rotate the motifs on the screen, navigating between the perspectives of trees and forest within each work.

A project that has been ongoing since September 2020. A video is made every day. All of the “one day, one shot” images are based on the motif of fire. The aim is to create a continuity like a campfire—finite, yet somehow evoking infinity. These daily videos (fires) from January 1 to December 31, 2024, have been compiled here. At the same time, each video is given the name of a specific station. As if traveling, a fire is lit at each stop on a local train line. All of those station names are listed here. A station name contains memories and histories that differ from latitude and longitude or from municipal boundaries. If a station disappears or falls out of use, these videos (fires) may remember the memories left behind by the public.

Music Video for “JAB!”, an original project track by music producer Xansei. Built from footage shot in LA, with red and blue planes added to the composition. Glitch effects were sometimes used. The aim was to emphasize the decadent world and occult atmosphere of the track through the visuals as well. Meanwhile, Xansei himself directly approached us after resonating with Renki Yamazaki’s “CONTINUITY” series from the One Shot a Day project. It can be said that this MV came to be because the worlds of the song and the visuals were originally adjacent to each other. Needless to say, the music remains the true centerpiece of the MV. However, this MV made us feel the possibility that the visuals and the music could stand on equal footing. In other words, it gave us an opportunity to reconsider how the visuals in an MV might avoid being “closed off” within the MV itself.

This work was created with the hope of prompting viewers to realize how extraordinary everyday life, which we take for granted, truly is, and to inspire a change in awareness. Through my own experience of being affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, I became aware of the value of the “ordinary” in daily life. However, as the years passed, I found that I had somehow grown accustomed to that very “ordinary.” That is why I decided to focus not only on what was “lost,” but also on what still remains, and to bring this perspective to life through video. I want to help people recognize the value of their uneventful daily lives and convey the underlying fragility behind ordinary days in which nothing seems to happen. Because the earthquake occurred on March 11, I set the scene to shift from everyday moments after 3 minutes and 11 seconds. My own perspective and sensibility are reflected in the character design and movement, so I aimed to create a sense of originality that cannot be expressed elsewhere. Even if someone else were to tackle a similar theme, I believe this work would still be one of a kind because it is created from my own experience and point of view.
