With direction by Yuichi Kodama (vivision) and the outstanding artistry of SIGNIF, one of Japan’s leading motion graphics teams, the production opened a new door in spatial stage design.
Brand movieExperimental filmFashion filmPromotion G-STAR x FACETASM “DENIM DEPOT UNIVERSE” 2024 00:01:01 Announcement of “DENIM DEPOT UNIVERSE,” a limited capsule collection by “FACETASM,” led by Hiromichi Ochiai, and Amsterdam-based denim brand “G-STAR RAW.” Stills and a PR movie, with total direction by C.O.L.O / COSMIC LAB, have been unveiled. By wearing clothing, humans have challenged harsh environments such as outer space and the ocean floor, gaining freedom and creativity. Under this theme, scenes were created that seamlessly connect everyday life with adventures to unknown places. The filming location was the “Misono Universe Building,” a venue that has been ahead of its time since the 1950s. Inspired by NASA archives, the denim designs and the one-of-a-kind space of the Misono Building resonated with each other, giving rise to a new creation.

This is the world premiere of THE TRIP -Enter The Black Hole-, a stage art work co-produced by Jeff Mills, the world-renowned DJ and pioneer of Detroit techno, and COSMIC LAB, one of Japan’s most innovative visual teams. With black holes as its theme, Jeff Mills handled the overall direction, script, and music, while COSMIC LAB expanded his vision of the cosmos and way of thinking through visual direction. In addition, Juju Togawa, who like Jeff Mills has been active since the early 1980s, joined as a singer, and choreographer Hiroaki Umeda, internationally acclaimed for his cross-disciplinary work spanning contemporary dance and digital art, was also part of the production. The stage costumes for each performer were designed by Hiroshi Ochiai of FACETASM, one of Japan’s leading fashion brands. This live expanded cinema work, a journey to the farthest reaches of the universe and an exploration of the deepest depths of the mind, was performed at ZEROTOKYO, equipped with a visual system developed by COSMIC LAB and state-of-the-art sound facilities.
AnimationArt workExperimental filmMusic videoOriginalPV Contradiction – Atman in Brahman (Radio Edit) by Jeff Mills x Jun Togawa 2024 00:03:34 On Monday, April 1, 2024, “Mujun - Atman in Brahman (Radio Edit)” was released from the soundtrack of THE TRIP -Enter The Black Hole-, a stage production exploring the mysteries of the cosmos, presented by COSMIC LAB and overseen by Jeff Mills. The track features Jun Togawa, a legendary figure with an overwhelming presence in the Japanese music scene, as vocalist. The worldviews of Jeff Mills and Jun Togawa organically blend and crystallize, and in the MV, she intersects with an AI version of Jun Togawa, resulting in a band-oriented yet minimal, floating track that breaks free from the image traditionally associated with Jeff Mills. Shinichi Yamaguchi and Kazuhide Yamaji of Togawa’s band Yapoos also took part in the recording. Lion Merry, another member of the band, is credited with composing the melody.

The energy radiating from both artists expanded, creating an experimental moment of wonder.

COSMIC LAB amplified into an XR visual space a luminous sound performance by ∈Y∋, who continues to push experimental expression to its limits, performed with the body connected to two specialized devices: a wrist-mounted type and a cone-shaped type.

LOST TAPES MIX is a conceptual DJ set made possible by digitizing a large number of open-reel tapes unearthed in the attic of the “Misono Universe Building.” The mix primarily features recordings made in the 1960s and 70s by the actual house band of “Cabaret Universe,” with many arrangements by Taro Kidan. An XR live stream set on a virtual universe that faithfully recreates in CG the peak of the original Misono Universe in 1956. The DJ and VJ played from the COSMIC LAB studio in Osaka, while virtual lighting joined the session remotely in real time from an undisclosed location in Tokyo via VPN, with the final output streamed from the DOMMUNE studio in Shibuya.
