Mifuneyama Rakuen was created in 1845, in the late Edo period, on a site spanning 500,000 square meters. Over the course of long, long time, immense rocks, caves, and forests took shape here, and in each era, people have found meaning in them. One can feel that one’s own existence lies upon the long-continuing, seamless continuity of the workings of nature and humankind.
teamLab’s “Digitized Nature” is a project in which digital technology, itself immaterial, allows “nature to become art as nature.” Using the forms of the giant rocks, caves, forests, and the garden itself, which has endured for centuries, as they are, we find meaning in these presences that transcend the self through a long passage of time, as “continuous life.” And in the present day as well, we wish to continue layering new meanings onto this place.
