Nulbarich – TOKYO

2021
Only Image
Amid the anxiety of the ongoing spread of the coronavirus, I wanted to portray this era in a positive light by expressing how beautiful everyday life and each person’s life can be. Rather than using unnatural direction more typical of dramas or films, I aimed for a style that felt as natural as possible. Instead of a stereotypical “TOKYO,” I was very particular about the locations, composition, and color palette so that it would feel real and captivating. My belief is that beauty does not lie only in glamorous, meticulously crafted worlds; any world can become beautiful depending on the perspective or the way it is framed.

JKD planned and produced a brand film for Goldwin Athletic / Outdoor. The brand film was screened at Goldwin’s booth at “OutDoor by ISPO,” the world’s largest trade show, held in Munich in the summer of 2019. Inspired by Japanese haiku, the 90-second film depicts a runner’s journey from the city to nature across a three-screen multiscreen setup. Like the brand’s previous ski film, this work embodies Goldwin’s philosophy of unwavering minimalism and received an excellent response on site.

Goldwin : Branded Film 2019

2019
Only Image
JKD planned and produced a brand film for Goldwin, a brand that has spent more than 50 years developing comfortable, functional apparel using the technology it has cultivated in the field of skiing. The setting was the backcountry of Hachimantai, a 1,613-meter peak spanning Iwate and Akita Prefectures. In this dreamlike film, only a single ski track is drawn across an empty, silver-white slope, throwing up clouds of snow and expressing the world of the Goldwin brand, which is infused with the spirit of minimalism. For the shoot, the latest drone, the DJI Inspire 2, was used, and backcountry specialists Katsuyuki Kono and Kazushige Sekiya, who were stationed on a ridge about two kilometers away, were captured carving down the snowfield with a high-speed camera. In this version, the skiers were removed in post-production, emphasizing the beauty of the tracks etched into the silver-white slope and the presence of the unseen skiers, resulting in a piece that allows the audience to feel as though they themselves are blending into nature. Directed by Chris Ladds. Music by Berlin-based composer Midori Hirano.

Helly Hansen: Be With Water

2019

JKD produced a brand movie for Helly Hansen, the Norwegian brand known for its highly functional waterproof wear. The concept, “BE WITH WATER,” expresses the world of a brand that has been connected to “water” for more than 140 years through waterproof technologies for sailing, trekking, snow sports, and more. Directed by Yasuhito Tsuge, the film portrays the journey of water—from rain falling from the sky, through mountains and rivers, and out to the sea—from the perspective of a trekker. Through magnificent natural landscapes, bold close-ups, and restrained sound design, the work conveys a sense of awe toward nature, as well as Japanese aesthetics and spirituality.

Fujii Kaze - "Enough Already" Official Video

I worked on this piece through repeated discussions with Fujii Kaze. The concept of the work is vagrancy and true freedom. Until a few years ago, I had personal interactions with people experiencing homelessness, and I recalled what I had felt at that time when planning this project. The public image of “homeless = poor, unhappy” is, for some people, a misconception. The homeless people I met had chosen a free way of living unconstrained by society, and their hearts were very wealthy. And we, living in the present day, realized that we are bound by so many things and rules that we are not truly free. These are things I recalled and thought about only as part of constructing the work, and what I wanted to convey in this piece was: That beautiful things are not the only things that are beautiful, and that any existence can be made cool depending on the expression of the artist.
