Shiki Kishoza - A Stage Curtain Woven by Time
2019

To commemorate the 145th anniversary of Meijiza, the theater with the longest history in Tokyo, teamLab created “Shiki Kishoza – The Curtain Weaving Time,” a stage curtain that gradually changes day by day. This work reconstructs the intricate decoration of a traditional stage curtain through digital imagery. On the 7-meter-tall by 20-meter-wide curtain, the streets and daily life of Nihonbashi around the time of the Civilization and Enlightenment period, when Kishoza, the predecessor of Meijiza, was founded, are depicted, along with a variety of occupations from that era and historical figures. The world of the work changes daily in accordance with the actual time, season, and weather of Nihonbashi; the activities of the people change along with it. As the sun rises over Nihonbashi, the scene brightens; as sunset approaches, it turns into a sunset glow; and as night deepens, it becomes darker. If it is actually raining, it also rains within the world of the curtain. In addition, according to the season, you can see seasonal scenes such as cherry blossom viewing, festivals, autumn leaves, and snowy landscapes.
