The first theatrical feature animation project by animation creator Gensho Yasuda, who has amassed over 5.8 million total followers across social media platforms including YouTube and TikTok, is finally underway! Yasuda, who has earned high acclaim both in Japan and overseas for his independently produced 3D short animations, music videos, and corporate promotional animations, is bringing this film to life as a completely original work, rendered entirely in full 3DCG and boasting “300% pure Gensho Yasuda.” A crowdfunding campaign held during production achieved more than 230% of its goal, proving just how overwhelmingly popular and highly anticipated it is. The story is set in a future just a little way ahead of the present. Mizutame Akira, a scientific prodigy who succeeded in developing and commercializing Salt, a robot that supports people’s daily lives, has been struggling as every new invention he attempts ends in failure. Then, after hearing from a friend that having a girlfriend can “power you up,” he literally and scientifically creates an artificial human girlfriend named “No. 0.” Torn between programmed emotions and feelings that continue to grow, No. 0 wavers in the space between the two. Will what blossoms between her and Akira, who is awkward when it comes to connecting with others, be “love,” or something else...? Bringing these fascinating characters to life are Atsumi Tanezaki, whose chameleon-like acting shines in roles such as Anya in SPY×FAMILY and Frieren in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, as No. 0, and Shun Horie, who has been steadily cast as a lead in numerous popular works, including his role as Kyotaro Ichikawa in The Dangers in My Heart, as Mizutame Akira. A wildly fresh cyber love suspense filled with unpredictable twists, as depicted by Gensho Yasuda, is now set to spread across the world────!!

This exhibition is a ritual in which the artist, the viewer, and AI collaborate to summon new yokai through haiku. The artist breaks apart renku (5/7/5) created through an automatic-writing-like process, and the viewer freely creates a haiku (5/7/5) from those multiple words. The haiku formed from the viewer’s chosen combination is rewritten by ChatGPT into a 50-word English poem. The English poem is then read by an image-generation AI that imitates Takakura’s style, summoning a new yokai. As soon as it is born, the yokai is released into the online world, destined to become an NFT bearing the name of the haiku. This exhibition reconsiders the themes that Surrealism pursued through the lens of contemporary AI. Generative AIs such as ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion learn from vast archives of all human knowledge from around the world available on the internet, and output text and images through a kind of imagination that is not human. Isn’t this a mode of access very close to the Surrealists’ attempts to reach the human unconscious at the height of Surrealism? Rather than accessing dreams or the inner world of the unconscious, contemporary humanity uses the internet to access the archive of all humankind, and with the help of AI, a nonhuman imagination, makes choices through what might be called an “unconscious consciousness.” In this exhibition, the imaginative powers of the artist, the viewer, and AI, placed side by side, perform a ritual to summon countless new “yokai” as “nonexistent (digital) beings” in the form of NFTs online.
