I searched for algorithms whose names begin with each of the 26 letters from A to Z, and used them to create animated typography. Since the rise of NFTs, the genre of generative art has been undergoing renewed reevaluation. Although I have spent many years writing code and making works myself, when asked, “What is generative art?” I often find myself unsure how to answer. At the core of generative art are algorithms. Of course, one can create one’s own, but there are already many “masterpiece” algorithms in existence. In this work, I reimplemented those algorithms in JavaScript. Through this project, I want to think about the appeal of coding and algorithms, apart from art or design. It is also an attempt to place value on the process, which is often overlooked in the age of AI, and to once again draw out the joy of implementation.

An animation created for the newly established “Exchange Space” at the Nagano Prefectural Museum of Art. It is projected onto a large L-shaped screen formed by combining two walls, each 3 meters high and 12 meters wide. The “single line” that appears on a screen composed of simple monochrome colors moves according to the following rules: It moves by “tracing” a predetermined path. In other words, all the stories are connected by a single line. The length of the line is kept almost constant. Because of the constraint that the line’s length remains constant, it is impossible to view the full story all at once as a single picture. While following the ever-moving line with their eyes, viewers can actively take part in the work and enjoy it by unraveling and imagining the hidden story. As the single line transforms in diverse ways—into a small bird, a girl, a submarine, a crocodile, a spider’s web, and more—the story unfolds. When viewed as a video, however, it becomes clear that the work has a three-part structure: after the first story, “the story of a certain bird,” and the second story, “the story of a certain girl,” come to an end, the two are combined to create a third, new story. The composition in which “two stories meet” makes use of the L-shaped walls and is explored through both image and music.

Video installation created by a trio: photographer Taisuke Koyama × creative collective PARTY × musician Shohei Amimori “GINZA GROUND GAP” is an installation that brings subtle changes to the rooftop garden space through a chain of three media—video, photography, and sound—recorded, shot, and captured in the streets of Ginza. In this work, the scenery at ground level and the view from the rooftop gradually blend together, giving the streets of Ginza and the people passing through them a faint sense of unease and uplift. The video is created from the movement of people striding through Ginza; the photographs from objects on the street surface and those that create boundaries; and the sound from people’s footsteps and the vibrations of the air.

As part of the Agency for Cultural Affairs project “Media Arts Japan Promotion Initiative at Airports and Other Locations,” this work was exhibited in the “ETERNAL ~ A Thousand Seconds of Stillness” exhibition held at Haneda Airport. This work was created inspired by the production approach of “Kirin Mon Mandala,” designed by Habotaba Shoryu and Yoji. The technique of monshō ue, in which monogram designs have long been created in the Edo period by combining perfect circles, as practiced by monshō ue artist Mr. Habotaba, was applied by Seiichi Sega through waveforms drawn using physical simulation. By finding natural beauty and harmony in the simple lines formed by the combination of variously sized perfect circles, and overlaying them onto landscapes that appear to have arisen by chance, such as waves and terrain, the work expresses the “moment of composition” in beauty. In response to Kyoka’s sound image, in which ripples are composed as a visualization of sound along the x, y, and z axes, a vast space surrounded by a three-screen display was created.
