Using disc unfolding and long one-take camera work, I treated the entire song as a small narrative. I also built the typography from motion design to match the song’s sense of floating, and scattered little “what happens next?” elements throughout. The piece was created with the intention of delivering a viewing experience in which, even though the song runs for a relatively long 5 minutes and 30 seconds, you end up thinking, “I was just staring at the screen, and the song was already over.”

"Sonata" was presented as part of the project "New Mycelium Network," curated by Kate Neave and produced by OpenLab and TokenTraxx. The music was created by sound artist Xiaolin. This work was strongly inspired by the line "fungi is a symbol of survival" from the concept of NEW MYCELIUM NETWORK. The flowers that appear in the piece were inspired by Monotropastrum humile. Monotropastrum humile is a mushroom-like flower with a highly unusual ecology. It parasitizes fungi and, indirectly, lives by obtaining organic matter through the fungi from trees that produce it through photosynthesis. Its mysterious color and form without chlorophyll, and the strength of its life, are deeply fascinating, and I was moved by the way it lives beautifully and positively under any circumstances.
