“Pictographs,” which are characters drawn by depicting the shapes of objects, make up only 12.6% of the commonly used kanji in Japan, surprisingly. As someone who loves pictographs, that felt a little disappointing, so I tried making my own original pseudo-pictographs. Some of them seem to roughly match their meanings, while others are completely unrelated, yet they still suggest some kind of story. This reflects the limitless possibilities of “characters.” It is also an attempt at my own kind of “mitate” — seeing one thing as something else. I compiled several pieces I had posted on social media into one video. I titled it “like,” which can mean both “something like ○○” and “to like.” I hope you enjoy watching it. Independent production. A geometric motion unfolding in a monochrome world with an odd texture. It expresses the uncanny feeling that arises when the most inorganic objects are imbued with the most organic energy.

This work received the Jury Prize in the Morisawa category at the VGT Motion Award 2025. The theme was “Motion graphics that bring out the new appeal of fonts.” In response to this theme, I defined the new appeal of fonts as “the joy of choosing a font.” I created this piece with the concept of conveying that joy, especially in an era when anyone can create, express, and produce creative work. Rather than relying on my own colorful and pop-style expression, I aimed for motion that is simple yet meaningful, aligned with the composition, BGM, and overall concept.
