Ambient Digital Signage “Duct Mimicry”

2022
00:01:10
We designed an ambient LED signage display that “mimics ductwork.” The LED signage is modeled after ducts installed on the ceilings inside actual buildings, and has been designed as cylinders and rectangular prisms that are the same size as real ducts. It represents a new form of LED signage that coexists with architecture. The economic information displayed on the LED signage is updated in real time every day with economic data from SPEEDA and NewsPicks provided by Uzabase. It was conceived as a scene in which the information flows through the ducts together with water, racing through the city of Marunouchi, one of the centers of the Japanese economy. To mimic ductwork, we simulated how sunlight enters over the course of a year. In addition, by installing illuminance sensors and linking the display to the lighting in the interior space, we designed the visuals on the LED signage to be overlaid with shadows. By reflecting color from elements such as the staircase, we pursued “mimicry” as closely as possible.

EXPO 2025 OSAKA

2019

“2025 Osaka–Kansai Expo Bid Plan” Mori Art Museum Exhibition In 2025, the proposed site plan for the Osaka–Kansai Expo bid activity centers on keywords such as “decentralization” and “dispersal” to embody a future society, expressing the constantly changing relationships among diverse individuals and groups that are unique to our time. At the same time, it is also a model for a next-generation urban structure, designed to accommodate the operation of new urban elements such as autonomous mobility, including self-driving vehicles, and AR/MR (augmented reality/mixed reality). In this exhibition, the various new initiatives and characteristics incorporated into the plan are reconfigured as one possible form of the future city. In the cities of the future, diverse users interact in complex and dispersed ways within digital space. There is the “physical world,” which we perceive as objects, and the “information world,” represented by the web, as well as a “common ground” that serves as the intermediary realm between them. This exhibition expresses the social implementation of common ground. Visitors can experience the perceptual gaps between humans and digital agents, as well as our relationship with a world on an urban scale that cannot be perceived by humans.

GINZA GROUND GAP

2020

Video installation created by a trio: photographer Taisuke Koyama × creative collective PARTY × musician Shohei Amimori “GINZA GROUND GAP” is an installation that brings subtle changes to the rooftop garden space through a chain of three media—video, photography, and sound—recorded, shot, and captured in the streets of Ginza. In this work, the scenery at ground level and the view from the rooftop gradually blend together, giving the streets of Ginza and the people passing through them a faint sense of unease and uplift. The video is created from the movement of people striding through Ginza; the photographs from objects on the street surface and those that create boundaries; and the sound from people’s footsteps and the vibrations of the air.

Nike Unlimited Stadium

2016

As part of NIKE’s globally rolled-out Unlimited campaign, we were asked to create something bold and spectacular for the Olympic season, and produced “Nike Unlimited Stadium.” Based on the idea of an athletics venue where you can compete endlessly against yourself, inspired by the theme of Unlimited, we designed an interactive track stadium modeled on the shape of the sole of the Nike Lunar Epic Low Flyknit. LED screens were lined along the 200-meter track, allowing participants to race against their own avatars from one lap earlier, displayed on the screens. The event was held for two weeks in the heart of Manila, Philippines, open to the public. It was enjoyed by everyone who took part, and also received international acclaim, including winning the Grand Prix at the Clio Awards.
