Description: Due to the impact of COVID-19, the school environment surrounding children in the 2020 school year changed dramatically. As an alternative to elementary school field trips, a virtual social studies excursion was conducted using online videos. Through the words of the craftsman, we introduce the points they pay special attention to when making randoseru school backpacks, as well as a message for elementary school students.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, the school environment surrounding children changed dramatically in the 2020 school year. As an alternative to elementary school field trips, a social studies excursion was conducted using online videos. This video follows the process of how a randoseru is made, from cutting a single piece of leather to the finished school bag. You can also see the workshop and the artisans at work.

Tsuchiya Kaban: Social Studies Field Trip Anywhere, Part 1: Quiz Edition

Description: Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the school environment surrounding children in the 2020 school year changed dramatically. As an alternative to elementary school extracurricular classes, we conducted an online video-based field trip for social studies. In the first installment, children learn in a quiz format about the origin of the name randoseru and the materials used to make it—things surprisingly not many people know. To provide an experience as close as possible to an actual field trip, we also prepared a “study sheet” and an “online craftsman interview.” By filling out the sheet while watching the video, children can gain a deeper understanding of how randoseru are made.
