Tatematsu Natsuna, yonayona graphics, and I each divided the project into separate parts and directed them individually. We set the world of the deep web, which is the theme of Madobe Rika’s song, in an abandoned school, treating it as a Japanese liminal space. Also, to create a noisy texture that could not be achieved with effects alone, we used a VX-1000— a camera from the early 2000s, when the deep web and underground sites were thriving — along with DV tape, a low-resolution digital format, to recreate the low-resolution visual tone that filled the internet at the time.

Collaboration track “bootleg wonderland” by virtual singer Madobe Rika and TORIENA Planning and composition were handled by Toshitaka Shinoda. The video direction was divided among the three of them—Toshitaka Shinoda, Yonayona graphics, and Natsuki Tatematsu—each taking on different cuts. Shinoda conveyed the story concept to me, built around the imagery of Heisei-era internet horror and the deep web, connected with 9mm film footage shot in the mountains, and from there the cut concepts, imagery for each person’s assigned parts, and editing were all produced independently. For the cuts I was in charge of, I aimed to create sequences in which countless elements rush by like a flashback, drawing on the pleasant distortions and the layering of innumerable sounds that I felt in the music, as well as the project’s imagery. I also aimed to create cuts whose contrast with the live-action footage would remain as a sense of discomfort when placed side by side in the overall progression. Rather than delicate, detailed effective movement, I focused on inserting a variety of rough, miscellaneous effects, and I created the illustrations myself to add subcultural imagery to the material’s variety.

MV for “Aizome Summertime!!,” the main theme song of Hololive’s summer event, Holo Natsu Paradise. Based on a 3DCG sugoroku board game scene, this MV follows the Holomem’s summer青春 and their journey toward the live performance. Character design by Hiroyuki Ooyama (Umber). The CG scenes were handled by kumo.productions, the design by .MP, and the motion graphics by Kana Tatematsu. Opening sequence for the TV anime TRIGUN STARGAZE. The song is by ano. While using anime scenes from the TV series itself, the piece takes an approach of resampling the main story within the opening’s runtime through motion graphics and 3DCG. By replacing the backgrounds of the series footage during editing, the scenes were also made to appear in a different way. The design was handled by .MP, and the 3DCG was handled by Kirari Lab, led by Shunsuke Ohyama, as well as yonayona graphics. The motion graphics were handled by the A4A team, led by Kana Tatematsu, Kaito Mochida, and Reoru.

Title song for the film Fureru by YOASOBI. It is structured so that the story of Mari Okada’s novel “Fureru. no, Zenya.” and the story of the film itself intersect. The scenes from the novel were directed by Tatsuyuki Nagai, who also directed the film, while the film scenes were created as image animation by a team of animators led by Yoshiki Imazu. It is a music video brought together through the efforts of many creators and everyone involved.

I was responsible for the motion. The design, composed of animation data and lyrics, is packed with information even though each cut is short. Within the fast-paced editing, I carefully planned where to place priority when adding motion so that the lyrics, the characters’ emotions, and the roles they play would come across clearly. I also considered what should be moving to feel good at a moment’s glance.

“Chimera Project,” an original concept, story, and character design by voice actress Aoi Yuki. It tells the story of Chimerios, or chimeras, born from the words spoken by humans through virtual communication such as social media. The seven Chimerios are characters personifying the days of the week: for example, Monday is gloomy because it comes right after the weekend, while Friday has a carefree, party-loving personality because it comes just before the break. While expressing the Chimerios’ terrifying yet adorable world, the music video depicts their desire to eat the words spoken by humans.
