This work was created for the exhibition “Patterns of Flow.” --- “Patterns of Flow” is an exhibition celebrating a new generation of Japanese artists who create work using code. Following in the footsteps of computer art pioneer Hiroshi Kawano’s experimental aesthetics and continuing the international dialogue initiated by Jasia Reichardt, this exhibition explores the power of generative systems to capture a world in flux. This work uses photographs that capture Yamaguchi Prefecture’s natural environment and local character to express the changing seasons and the cycle of nature. Through programming, the pixels that make up the photographs are repeatedly broken apart and set in motion, layering and shifting to generate new forms and rich colors. We hope these transformations convey the growth of plants and the energy of nature, and deliver a powerful message of beginnings and renewal in life. “Curiosity Blocks” is an animated work that uses the technique of anamorphosis, in which a distorted image is drawn in advance so that it appears correctly when reflected in a cylindrical mirror. The artist envisioned curiosity connecting and overlapping, generating new knowledge and discoveries, and used a method of combining multiple animation elements. The artist, who is also a printmaker, superimposed the relationship between plate and print onto the relationship between the image on the display and the image in the mirror, and incorporated into the animation the layered structure of multi-color prints, in which each color has its own distinct layer and overlaps to form a layered composition. The title “Blocks” carries meanings such as “a mass,” “divisions separated by a grid,” “a series of instructions in a program,” and “a woodblock printing plate.”
