An immersive operatic space that transcends the concept of opera through a sculptural space of light The art collective teamLab designed the scenography for a new production of Giacomo Puccini’s final opera, Turandot. Together with director Daniel Kramer, they conceived a scenography that fused Kramer’s interpretation of Turandot with teamLab’s art. Over five years of planning, they explored the concept, new interpretations, metaphors, symbols, and how to realize the visual expression of each scene. The cast becomes immersed in, and united with, a sculptural space of light, and the stage and audience continue seamlessly without boundaries. This production had its world premiere at the Grand Théâtre de Genève in Geneva, Switzerland in June 2022, and the Tokyo performances by Tokyo Nikikai Opera Theatre were held from February 23 to 26, 2023. A visual work created to convey the story of the Japan Heritage site “Tatsuta Ancient Road and Kamenose,” weaving together the landscape of the Tatsuta Ancient Road in the Nara period with local legends handed down since that time. The “Tatsuta Ancient Road” was developed as Japan’s first official road connecting Yamato (Nara) and Kawachi (Osaka) from the Asuka period onward, and in the Nara period in particular it was known as a road traveled by emperors and government officials that played an important role in the nation’s development. Through pixel animation, it meticulously recreates the processions of imperial visits, the dragon said to have descended on Mt. Goza, and the natural scenery depicted in Manyoshu poems.

“Life is...” Introverted, extroverted—life and death repeated unconsciously in everyday life. On the timeline from the birth of the universe to the present, the lifespan of every living being is astonishingly fleeting. It expresses the strength and beauty of life, which resists various events and continues to live on through a chain of memories. All living beings, including humans, are unaware of the phenomena taking place within their own bodies, such as the life and death of cells. For example, if planets or the universe were a single organism and living being, endlessly repeating life and death across an eternally long span of time, perhaps we too are like the cells that support their life processes.

作品について 2019年7月19日、池袋に12スクリーンの大型シネマコンプレックス「グランドシネマサンシャイン」がオープン。グランドシネマサンシャインは、常設の映画館として国内最大となる 「IMAX®レーザー/GTテクノロジー」や、日本初上陸となる体感型シアター「4DX with ScreenX」といった最新鋭のシアター設備に加え、映画の世界に浸ることができる遊び心あるインテリアの起用など、従来のシネマコンプレックスの基準を超える設備とサービスにより、未来基準のエンタテインメントを提供している。 WOWは、本施設の4階エントランスロビーに設置されるシャンデリア「Lumière」と、12階の天井を覆う巨大LEDディスプレイ「Motion Ceiling」の演出を担当。また、「Motion Ceiling」の世界観を切り出し、施設内の壁面や柱に設置された47台の55インチサイネージ用縦型ディスプレイに映像が連動する演出も担当した。 Lumière 「現代的な解釈と技術を加えた新しいアート」として、グランドシネマサンシャインのアイコンとなるシャンデリアを制作。ステンレスの鏡面仕上げで作られた直径2.7mの球体の表面を47つにボロノイ分割し、4方向から映像をプロジェクションすることにより、中央部に仕込まれたスクリーンに映し出された映像が複雑に反射を繰り返す。シャンデリアのデザイン・意匠設計は、トラフ建築設計事務所が担当。巨大な光の万華鏡を思わせるシャンデリアがグランドシネマサンシャインのエントランス空間を華やかに演出する。 Motion Ceiling 横幅約31メートル、高さ約10メートルの巨大な天井を覆うのは、アートモーショングラフィックス作品「Motion Ceiling」。美しい天井画をイメージした本作は、軽快なタイルアクションが特徴の「GEOMETRY」、大空に巨大な布が美しくなびく様子を描いた「REFLECTION」、無数のパーティクルに包まれた都市を煌びやかに表現する「LIGHT」の3つのテーマを軸に制作した。天井全体を覆うLEDディスプレイは、その巨大さから、周辺の通りからも眺める事ができる。カフェスペースやラウンジで寛ぐ人々、周辺の通りから見上げて鑑賞する人々、双方の視点を考慮して演出した。
