Sekigahara Landscape Folding Screen

00:01:27
Pixel animation inspired by the Important Cultural Property “Battle of Sekigahara Folding Screen” (held by the Osaka Museum of History), believed to have been painted in the early 17th century.
The battle scenes depicted on the screen are overlaid with the natural scenery that still remains at the former battlefield today, and reimagined as an animation. This spatially composed video installation uses six large monitors and six directional speakers, with intricately crafted pixel animation like a work of art. It presents a contemporary reinterpretation of the folding screen, which, while being a painting, was at the same time a sculptural and spatial device.
Produced as part of the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ cultural promotion project “Culture Gate to Japan,” it was unveiled at Chubu Centrair International Airport. It is now on permanent display at the Gifu Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum.
