Urgent Need to Defecate Song

2023

Within the disease awareness project “Toward a Society Where We Can Talk About Living with Ulcerative Colitis,” jointly created by Mochida Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Eli Lilly Japan K.K., this web video, “The Song of the Urgency of Bowel Movement,” portrays life with “urgency to defecate.” By listening to the real voices of patients, it depicts their daily lives—struggling with the symptoms of urgency to defecate, finding ways to cope, and making efforts—set to a song performed by voice actress Chie Nakamura, who herself is a patient with ulcerative colitis. This work was inspired by the simple question I once had while playing Pokémon: “What happens to the Pokémon that got away?” Created as a juvenile story together with novelist Yusaku Kitano, it depicts the beginnings of research encountered through play in a secret-base-like setting, with the goal of conveying to children the message that curiosity and a spirit of inquiry are what drive us to open up the world.

The method of making the reel was designed as a grid system in the time dimension. Rather than cutting from the full-length footage each time, I chose an editing approach in which short sequences were pre-cut and then rearranged like a puzzle. By defining the production process itself, the aim was to give the final output a tone independent of any individual worker, layering in the magic of division of labor and collaboration.
