At YouTube Space Tokyo in Mori Tower, Roppongi, a live stream of a special performance from the party “SpookyHouse,” held on Friday, 10/31, featuring a collaboration between “Daito Manabe / Rhizomatiks” and the breakbeat unit “HIFANA.” With the concept of a real-time music video, this new type of live visual work fused motion capture, AR, and other technologies with musical performance and visual expression at a high level, and drew a major response from YouTube’s global network.

teamLab will hold a solo exhibition, “teamLab: The Unbounded Flower Floating in the Sea of Eternality,” at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The exhibition will feature works including “Black Waves: Born, Buried, and Reborn,” an installation created by a single continuous wave; “Continuous Life and Death at the Now of Eternity - Live with the Whole World, Embodying the Change in a Perpetual Now,” a space that keeps transforming under the influence of visitors’ behavior; “KOSHI-KU,” calligraphy written in space; “Reversible Rotation - Black in White,” which rotates through the exhibition space; and “Graffiti Flowers Bombing,” in which flowers drawn by visitors are born onto the walls, multiply, and spread. Through this exhibition, teamLab seeks to explore a new relationship between us and the world, in which people become part of the artwork together with others, dissolve into it, and thereby transform the boundary between self and others into something continuous.

teamLab will hold a large-scale art exhibition, “teamLab: Forest of Life & Future Park,” at Party Pier Culture and Art Zone in Zhujiang, Guangzhou, China. This exhibition consists of “Forest of Life,” a space in which visitors are immersed in the works of the art collective teamLab, and “Future Park (Learn! Future Park),” an educational project that explores collaborative creativity. In “Forest of Life,” people wander through the work space with bodies endowed with intent, dissolve into the space of the work, feel the world with their bodies, and think about the world with their bodies. In “Future Park,” people nurture “co-creation” by enjoying creative experiences together with others.

An interactive video installation inspired by festivals and traditional events long passed down in Tohoku. In this work, the mysterious act of “transforming” into something other than a human being can be experienced through interactive visual expression. Taking four traditional customs—“Namahage,” “Shishiodori,” “Kasei-dori,” and “Sotome”—as motifs, the work visualizes them with WOW’s own interpretation. When a mask is put on in front of the screen, the viewer’s silhouette changes into each of these forms, and the blessings these events bring to people are projected as animation. This is an attempt to let viewers enjoyably experience the mysterious power of “becoming” someone other than themselves, or something other than human. The work carries the wish that by engaging with the traditional culture born of Tohoku’s land and climate through a completely new form of expression, its value will be passed on to the next generation.

teamLab will participate in the “2019 Beijing International Horticultural Exposition,” held in Beijing, China, and present the interactive work “teamLab: Continuous Life in a Beautiful World.” Exhibited in the Botanic Garden, this work depicts a world of continuous life through the rich, beautiful ecosystem of a mangrove forest and the life that inhabits it. Through art, we seek to explore new relationships between humans and nature, and between the self and the world. “teamLab: Continuous Life in a Beautiful World” begins with life-size mangroves, and as visitors gradually become smaller, it transforms into an enlarged underwater world, and then further into a microscopic world of microorganisms that cannot usually be seen. It aims to reveal the rich, beautiful, and continuous life of the mangroves, ordinarily unseen, and to bring people together in a single space where they become one and influence one another.

An animated short film created with drawings. It portrays the harsh theme of a daughter killing her father through loosely designed characters. What do “death,” “the unconscious,” and “nature” bring into a girl’s world, or what do they bring to light? Created with a focus on representation and performance, this is a wordless, immersive world of solitude. A story born from animation, suspended between dream and reality.
