About the work A man trudges through the same place again and again in a dim wasteland, as if dragging his weary body behind him. His doubles, replicated like afterimages, drift through the air, forming a huge mass that hovers over his head. On the ground, tentacles cling to him as if to hinder his steps. Before long, the man collapses to the ground and sinks into a mental realm. A visual work that depicts modern people, constantly exposed to information and living alongside complex human relationships, in an unfamiliar brilliance. The contours and boundaries of the self, shaped by self-awareness, waver, mutate, and dissolve. It portrays human beings living through this cycle. Directed and produced by the unit of Ryo Kitabatake and Takuma Sasaki, winners of Best of Stash and the Telly Award Gold. Filmed at Dimension Studio in London using the latest volumetric imaging technology, with music by Max Cooper. Max Cooper How many artists over the past decade have, like Max Cooper, reexamined and expanded the relationship between electronic music, visual art, technology, and science? The World of Irreversible Change

2022
00:04:33
This work exists somewhere in some era, and also here and now. In the work’s world, under the same flow of time as the real world, morning comes with sunrise at the place where the work is installed, and night begins with sunset. If it rains in the real world at the place where the work is installed, it also rains in the work’s world. Flowers and grasses change day by day with the seasons. People’s lives also change constantly according to the time of day and weather in the real world, while festivals and events are held with the seasons. As various stories are added each day, people’s activities continue on permanently. The work’s world is influenced by the viewer’s behavior. When the viewer touches the people in the work’s world, they react, but if the contact is slight, they return to their everyday lives. However, if the viewer continues to touch the people, those nearby begin to quarrel, which escalates into killing, and before long the conflict spreads throughout the town, engulfing it in flames. The fire continues for more than a year, the people die out, and the town is completely burned away. Even in the devastated town with no one left, as time passes in the real world, the sun rises and sets, the seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter come and go, and a few months later, new grasses and flowers sprout from the charred remains. Flowers and grasses are born, bloom, and fall in repeated cycles, changing day by day in the flow of real time. And over a long period of time, trees and plants grow thick and dense, repeating the changing of flowers each year, continuing forever. Once this world begins to burn, it can never again be seen as it was before the fire. And the viewer is also a participant in its consequences. Bone Nibble (Trailer)

This work is an animation based on my past experience of confronting death for the first time, set on the Shimanami Kaido. In some regions across Japan, there is a custom called “honekami,” in which, after cremation, one eats the bones of the dead in an attempt to take them into oneself and overcome grief. Whether I wanted it or not, my family in my hometown had this custom. The first death I experienced was my father’s, but when I was made to try “honekami” as part of the ritual, I could not bring myself to chew the bones. That became a childhood trauma: an experience of being unable to face my father’s death directly, and not knowing how to accept it. Like an imaginary bone stuck in my throat, it could not be put into words, nor could it be forgotten. More than ten years have passed since I left my small, distant hometown at the age of 15. Fireworks storage buildings still remain along the island’s coast. The fact that there were fireworks magazines, rather than air-raid shelters, in my neighborhood made me feel that death and merciless violence existed for me not as something to be endured, but as something to be inflicted. When I think about these things as an adult, I came to link my father’s bones with the fire in the fireworks magazine, and decided to face “honekami” once again. The island’s landscape and sea are full of life, and within their calmness there is an unchanging severity. The shadows of the dead still exist in the same space and time, both now and in the past. Through this project, by blurring the boundary between life and death, I sought to create a confrontation with the bones I could not chew. The visual concept of this project was to merge natural landscapes with childhood memories, and to visually bring memories to life through the accumulation of dots. For this reason, I used colored pens to layer pointillist dots on paper, then filmed the paper under a camera while placing it over transmitted light. In doing so, I hoped to entrust the haziness of memory and the emotions of childhood to the technique as particles of colored light.

Nissan Pavilion, an experiential entertainment facility where visitors can experience Nissan’s proud technologies and vision for the future, opened for a limited time in Yokohama Minato Mirai. Its concept is “Expanding Human Possibilities.” Among the experiential content that gives form to a near-future made possible by Nissan’s technology, WOW was responsible for the direction and production of THE CITY area. Visitors can experience an installation inspired by a “city energized by the connection between cars, people, and society.” In THE CITY, two of Nissan’s envisioned futures were visualized within the space. ROOM1 In a smoke-filled space, 195 laser modules and the motors that move them were installed. Each laser is individually controlled to create a variety of animations, and when a visitor enters the area, the system detects their presence and takes evasive action, making it an interactive space. This abstractly expresses the key sensing technologies that Nissan is pursuing in order to realize a society with zero traffic accidents. ROOM2 Approximately 150 translucent pillars of varying heights, abstracting a “city,” and three pillars with mock car units placed on top, representing “cars,” were arranged throughout the space, with all pillars self-illuminated. The light animations representing “CHARGE,” “SHARE,” and “SUPPLY,” which begin when a hand is placed over the car mock-up, express Nissan’s vision of a city energized through the sharing of energy and information. In addition, when hands are placed over all three pillars with the mock-ups at the same time, a special effect triggers a vividly colorful light animation. The production was designed to evoke a city that becomes increasingly vibrant as cars, people, and society connect. Both spaces were designed as immersive environments that, while abstract, allow visitors to feel Nissan’s vision for the future. "U-Nyan the Kitten Courier" Theme Song Animation PV

2021
00:01:01
This is the promotional music video for the third original animation by Studio Nanahoshi. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we began drawing illustrations and manga of “U-Nyan,” an innocent kitten delivery worker, on Twitter in an effort to create a work that would lift viewers’ spirits and bring them comfort. Once the concept had taken shape, we created a storyboard for a short animation. To let viewers enjoy the process of the work coming together, we released it one cut at a time, then added the theme song to the completed cuts and unveiled it as a PV. Using this PV as a basis, we are currently producing a roughly six-minute main feature through crowdfunding with supporters. We aim to create an animation that can be enjoyed by both adults and children, putting our heart into portraying U-Nyan as he learns that “it may not be a big deal, but it is an important role for that person.” <Synopsis> The kitten “U-Nyan” is overjoyed to be starting his first delivery job! However, he ends up smashing the pizza to bits and trying to sneak a taste of the donuts, and things just don’t go very smoothly... The carefree, innocent U-Nyan starts to feel anxious too. The residents of the town he is delivering to can’t help worrying whether U-Nyan will make it there safely, and before they know it, they’re lending a hand and watching over his growth. This work is a heartwarming story about “the interactions between small children and the adults who watch over them.”

I imagined this work from the concept of the girls in “Ne mo Ha mo Rumor” winning the Japanese dance championship and then appearing at the world championship as Japan’s representatives next. When I was told about this MV project, I wanted to incorporate something new, so aside from the giant monolithic structure that appears in the video, everything was newly developed for this MV. That includes 20 battery-powered wireless moving lights, 40 LED poles, and the WAVING LED RIBBON that appears in the bridge section. The stage set itself does not move, and I wanted to break away from the idea of “things that are behind the performers.” So I decided to try a theme where the artists and the space become one. In this MV, ribbon performers come right up close to the members’ faces, and by making the moving lights wireless, they can be placed even on the dance floor, allowing beams of light fused with the members to dance together. The LED poles also continuously change shape, dancing alongside the members by mimicking the hand motions of their right and left arms. While keeping the artists at the center, this MV keeps expanding the space around them. I have mainly worked on live performance direction up until now, and AKB48 also value the kind of live, in-the-moment experience you get in theater performances, so this MV was produced with the image of watching one show all the way through. I think there is a certain comfort in watching a performance continuously, and there are always new discoveries no matter how many times you watch it, so I hope people will watch it again and again. I don’t think I’ll be able to pour this much passion into something for a while(笑)。

I just absolutely love the song! The moment I heard it, colorful candies started spinning around in my head. Since it’s “daishikyuu,” I wanted to make something fast-paced, chaotic, and above all super cute, so we had lots of costumes prepared, along with a bike, props, and all kinds of things for the shoot. With the theme of dreams you see while sleeping, I imagined a story like this: you desperately need to wake up, but you can’t get out of the dream world and end up going on a wild rampage! Also, I planned it with an image of a struggle over who has dominion over the dream—whether it’s Kana-chan’s dream or Sakina-chan’s dream, whose dream is it, anyway!? In the end, the domination battle element was removed, and it was shaped into more of a dream world, a cute little space, and that sort of image... When I listen to the song, it gives me the image of the two of them playing sports, and I pictured them wearing baseball uniforms in a gyaru style. I thought it would be absolutely adorable, so we went with it. (Kind of like Ayaya’s “Tropica~l Koi Shite~ru” lol) I also pushed for us to film the bike scene. When you think of speed, you think of a bike. The animation is also gorgeous, and for the very first OP animation, I asked misa to create something based on the idea that it takes place inside a girl’s dream. It’s insanely cute and amazing. The animation for the first chorus is the scene where they blow away the nightmare, and that was created by RaParu-san. I’ve loved RaParu-san for a long time and always hoped we’d get to work together someday... so I was really happy that my wish finally came true. And for the flashy effect animation in the baseball scene, of course it had to be Tetsuya Tatamiya-kun, the reliable go-to for effect animation!

ASO CALDERA HIKE – HIKING SEASONS

2021
00:01:30
ASO CALDERA HIKE At the plaza in front of JR Kumamoto Station, we unveiled “ASO CALDERA HIKE,” a विशाल space themed around the Aso Caldera, a symbol of Kumamoto’s great natural landscape, with a maximum diameter of approximately 24 meters and a maximum height of approximately 2.4 meters. “What if Kumamoto’s great nature came to the very center of the city?” ASO CALDERA HIKE is a content experience that lets visitors immerse themselves in Aso, the symbol of Kumamoto’s natural beauty. A giant object, inspired by the outer rim mountains encircling the Aso Caldera and measuring up to approximately 24 meters in diameter, was installed at Amu Hiroba. Visitors can step inside the ring-shaped structure, wander around, or sit and relax at their leisure. At night, a show and interstitial effects are performed using a high-brightness projector of approximately 40,000 lumens installed on the upper floors of the station building. PARTY was responsible for the planning and overall direction. Period: Friday, December 3, 2021 – Monday, January 10, 2022 (national holiday) Location: Amu Hiroba (Shirakawa Exit Station Plaza, in front of Kumamoto Station) Show Direction: HIKING SEASONS The theme is the four seasons of Aso. This is an immersive art experience in which visitors walk through a giant object modeled after the Aso Caldera and enjoy the changing, majestic scenery of Aso. From January, when the land is covered in snow and ice, to controlled grass burning, fresh greenery, Miyama kirishima azaleas, grass and blue skies, and pampas grass tinged by the setting sun, leading to a December landscape sparkling with countless stars. A vast projection spread across approximately 600㎡ brings to life Aso’s magnificent scenery as it transforms with the seasons.

Fluctuation landscape|The MixC

WOW was responsible for the planning, direction, and production of a permanent installation to be installed in the outdoor plaza, Sunken Square, of The MixC, a massive shopping mall in Shanghai. The installation consists of 20 towers, each approximately 2.3 meters tall, with glass tiled over LED, spanning more than 10 meters in width. It was placed within the existing overflow structure in the plaza so that it would harmonize with the environment. There are two types of presentation, themed around natural phenomena and Shanghai’s nightscape, and the projected images repeatedly reflect and refract through the glass. Like a landscape of nature in constant transformation, the appearance of the work continually changes depending on the surrounding environment and the viewer’s position. Video works are often considered best when they are high-resolution and have a clearly defined beginning and end within a fixed timeline. However, this work was born from the idea that human imagination may possess infinite resolution and an infinite timeline. When you carefully observe the rippling surface of water or the bottom of a river, you seem to see reflected images of the surrounding scenery repeatedly forming and falling apart, creating a mysterious sensation as if you were seeing abstract and representational landscapes over and over again. Based on such an experience, this work expresses, through a visual interpretation, the distinctive scenery created by the properties of light—reflection and refraction.
