Based on the imagery evoked by the title and lyrics, as well as the band’s situation in 2024, we set the theme as “resonance and collision of wavelengths.” As reference points, we drew on Guillaume Apollinaire’s The Magician Who Decays and “Holography Hymn” from Tatsuhiko Shibusawa’s The Sun King and the Moon King to build the world of the piece. To bring the collage created on a flat surface into the real location, we produced the art direction as physical set pieces. With the band’s long-established formation having changed, while preserving the empty space at the center, we sought to honor the band’s intention, and we depicted the camera dolly moving side to side as literal gods of thunder and wind. We also used the set door to suggest that this place is connected to somewhere else. The cut tearing open into a transition likewise carried the intention of representing another place elsewhere.

Description: A comedic short-form animated series of dialogue-driven sketches featuring the protagonist Matsuda Meisaku, who aims to become a masterpiece himself, along with his eccentric classmates. By blending contemporary themes with classic stories, such as “The Three Little Pigs Who Dream of Becoming YouTubers” and “Cinderella the Tsundere,” it creates high-quality humor that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. The series began in 2016 on NHK E Tele’s “Bit World” and aired up to 230 episodes. It also released 14 episodes of “Ryugu Junior High Arc,” produced with funds raised through crowdfunding. Selected by the Japan Media Arts Festival Jury as a recommended work. Total views on its YouTube channel have surpassed 400 million.

Ending animation for the TV anime Bocchi the Rock! The 12 episodes are structured around four songs: “Distortion!!” for episodes 1–3, “Karakara” for episodes 4–7, “What’s Wrong?” for episodes 8–11, and “Rockn’ Roll, Morning Light Falls on You” for episode 12. We produced the three animations for “Distortion!!,” “Karakara,” and “What’s Wrong?” This film’s “What’s Wrong?” is the third animation, following “Distortion!!” and “Karakara.” The third one features the members of Kessoku Band dancing happily while the music plays. As the last of the three ending animations, and with the main story also entering its latter half, we wanted to create an animation that conveys the joy of the music so well that viewers can’t help but sway their shoulders along with it.

We produced the three animations for “Distortion!!,” “Karakara,” and “What’s Wrong?” “Karakara” in this work is the second animation, following “Distortion!!.” The second one is an animation featuring only Hitori Gotoh, a.k.a. Bocchi-chan, and portrays her inner worries, conflicts, and melancholy.

Out of the 12 episodes, episodes 1–3 used “Distortion!!,” episodes 4–7 used “Karakara,” episodes 8–11 used “Nani ga Warui,” and episode 12 used “Korogaru Iwa, Kimi ni Asa ga Furu,” making up a four-song structure. I produced the three animations for “Distortion!!,” “Karakara,” and “Nani ga Warui.” “Distortion!!” is the first of those three animations. The episode where the ED would change was not clearly decided, but it had already been decided that I would be in charge of three EDs, and since I had also been given the songs and scripts, I created a full three-ED structural proposal, character designs, and rough image boards before producing them one by one. For the first one, I wanted to make an ED that would let people who were seeing the work for the first time after the broadcast began, or who happened to turn on the TV and only saw the ending, understand what kind of series it was, so I directed it to become a symbolic visual piece through the use of color, performance scenes, and so on. Also, since the character designs would be simpler and have shorter proportions than in the main story, I worked with the intention of preserving each character’s distinctive traits while making the designs easy to animate.

A commercial produced to coincide with the book publication of “Chikomaru,” a four-panel comic about a cute but slightly pitiful hamster that I created. Using existing illustrations and video assets, I worked to make the video clearly convey what kind of work Chikomaru is. It was also the first video work in which someone other than myself handled the compositing; until then, whenever I directed and produced animation, I had taken care of the compositing myself.

A conversational animated series unfolding on YouTube. The theme is casual everyday conversations between two characters who work at an anime studio. Unlike the TV anime we usually produce, the story is looser, the cast is more relaxed, and with added on-screen text and other elements, it is a more “hobbyist” and “YouTube-like” work. Even so, it also includes a few touches unique to an animation studio, such as same-trace animation—a technique in which a character’s hair or fur trembles and moves.

A 360° animation that lets you look all the way around inside a classroom. This work was exhibited in the group show “End Roll of Incompleteness,” which focuses on “girls” who waver between childhood and adulthood, with “incompleteness” and “sex = life / sacredness” as its themes. Music video included on the first-press bonus edition of rapper-singer DAOKO’s second album. Since the song title is “Boku,” we developed the idea of “selfies and Instagram,” and because it was also meant to be an animated MV, we planned to use photographs for the backgrounds in order to reduce production time while improving quality. Based on that, we proposed a plot in which “while playing with an AR selfie app, you get sucked into an AR world and drift through cyberspace.” In keeping with lyrics that suggest DAOKO, after her major-label debut, gained new fans while also losing old ones, the MV depicts high school–aged daoko confronting the post-major-debut DAOKO, with the unsettling story gradually unfolding as her personality is peeled away, like a broken link on a website.

A comedy short anime that combines “for kids” and HIPHOP. For the role of the protagonist, Yohei, it features Subaru Kimura, who has become a leading rapper in the voice acting world through his starring role in Hypnosis Mic and his own music career. HIPHOP specialists were also brought in for the lyric writing and track production, making this a work that can be enjoyed not only by children but also by HIPHOP fans. Aired on “Oha Suta” from April 2019 to March 2020. 50 episodes in total. Recommended by the Selection Committee of the Japan Media Arts Festival.
