The video is titled “Atrophied.” Yet in contrast to that name, the blind figures in the video become animated and begin to move dynamically after encountering others and experiencing something akin to opening their eyes. So what, then, is the concept of “Atrophied” that the artist presents? It may be understood as a movement of the heart born through encounters with others. A person does not shrink when alone. When meeting someone new, the heart trembles, and in doing so, it can also atrophy. At times, one may even feel that it would have been better not to have met at all. Yet it is precisely when we overcome that and connect heart to heart with another person that catharsis is born. This video work is an experimental piece that records the performer’s physicality by entrusting its narrative to the body, as a re-experience of the artist’s own meditation practice and the act of relentlessly sharpening the senses and observing.
