This is the four-day process of a wildfire approaching a small village at the end of the Edo period. In an era shrouded by the invisible anxiety of the coronavirus pandemic, and swept up by rumors and information in which truth and falsehood are hard to distinguish, this work portrays the people of a small community in a bygone age who were forced to protect themselves and faced a crisis together. The personified flames were created by filming a performer’s pantomime of fire in live action, then using rotoscoping to redraw it from live action into animation.
