- Born in 1976 and raised in Tokyo, he graduated from the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Letters at Sophia University. After making his directorial debut with the short film RIGHT PLACE in 2005, he won the Grand Prix at the Young Directors Award at Cannes Lions the following year, establishing himself as a Japanese director recognized internationally. Since then, he has directed numerous commercials and music videos, and in 2014 his HONDA Internavi film Ayrton Senna 1989 won multiple honors at Cannes Lions, including the Titanium Grand Prix and a Gold in the Film category. In autumn 2018, his first feature film Her Love Boils Bathwater and the feature documentary The Tower of the Sun were scheduled for release. He is currently managed by GLASSLOFT in Japan and represented by Stink internationally, and while continuing his work as a visual director, he also remains active in creative projects such as NOddIN, an art project founded after the Great East Japan Earthquake that engages with society and politics through expression. He is also a co-founder of the production unit NION.
