According to legend, "Nomi no Sukune" is regarded as the father of Japanese sumo. He is also said to have abolished the practice of human sacrifice at the tombs of powerful chieftains and devised haniwa, unglazed clay sculptures, in their place, and to have died in Tatsuno, Hyogo Prefecture.
